I'm kind of torn on this one. Is 14 too young for a hand on the ass? I don't know. Definitely if the guy was 17/18. If he's 14/15 then I think I'd let it slide, as long as I knew they were going out, but I'd have a talk with her that night about respect and all that. I imagine the hardest part of parenting is to watch them make their own decisions. It's the whole loss of control thing.

From my viewpoint and the way I was raised, a young man or even an adult male should put his arms around a female's waist or shoulders. The hand on the ass is taking things a little too far in public. The End!

Take it from a grandfather of a teenage pregnancy, you did the right thing by letting her know that she's too young etc..., but one thing that I found out about the hard way is that what you stopped them from doing in public once has probably happened a hundred times when she's out with her friends etc.... You may have even created more rebellion. I wish I could have been more of a talker in these type of situations instead of a yeller, I probably wouldn't have become a grandfather before I was 40 years old!

I feel that sometimes we need to trust our teenagers decisions, but they can't make a decision unless they understand all of the consiquences, so it may be a good idea to talk to her about her future plans and let her know that babies will screw that all up! My daughter wanted to go to Berkley, but a baby caused her to get her GED and find work because there was NO support from the father and she couldn't raise a baby without the cash to pay for diapers etc.... her dreams have all been postponed until someday in the future when she can go to school while her kids are in school, no scholarships anymore.... it will have to be all out of pocket which meens that she will have to work.

Hey at home I get to put my hands where ever I want so I don't care. I like that you made the statement about values though. It all comes down to there being a time and place for everything. And your right that kids don't have the same values today. My goal with my 10 year old daughter is to instill some common sense, self respect and good values in her. I know easier said than done.

I think as long as they have a good role model showing off those values, it's easier than you think.

I've made blanket statements about "kids today" and I know they are not the norm. I think most kids are good kids with good values and a good home life. It's the bad ones we hear the most about.

But as long as the kid has a good role model, good values come easy.

I'm a father of a 13 year old girl. You did the right thing. I probably wouldn't have gone as far as telling him to leave, but certainly getting his hand off her butt and making sure her parents knew about it were well within the lines of what was reasonable.

Children will have whatever values are instilled in them. If all they get is "well, time's are changing, it's a different world than when I was a kid, teenagers are having sex all the time", etc etc, then guess what? They are going to assume that it's ok.

It's not ok.

It never was ok, it never will be ok. If teenagers (12-19) are having premarital sex, it's not ok.

The ones with a good head on their shoulders and have a decent sense of responsibility are few and far between.

Look at it this way: Every father wants his daughter to marry a "good" man, and every father "should" want his son to marry a "good" woman.

Yes, a hand on the ass at 14 - and even in public - is bad. If the shoulder or holding hands isn't good enough to show "we're together", then obviously one of them has a serious perception problem and doesn't need to be in public at all.

You did the right thing by separating them and telling her dad. Children do not need to think that sort of behavior is "ok".
