keyboards in metal

If they're used as some sort of colour - the way Maiden did, or with the big chorus type effects Nile use, then cool.
But when they're used as a solo instrument, or are pushed to the fore like Dimmu or Opeth are now doing, then it just doesn't fit.
I'm listening to Skyclad right now - fiddles and shit like that and it all sounds RIGHT.
Parping keyboards have no place in heavy metal.

I totally agree with Nuclear V. that any instrument is acceptable in any form of music.
IMO the problem in heavy music is that a lot of the keyboard players have a very poor choice when it comes to sounds and the way they play usually works against the song. Most of them sound exactly the same.
I mean why they want to make heavy metal sound like Euro-Dance or b-grade Vangelis?
Some want to add "symphonic effect" but it only makes it sound worse and un-natural. Hire a real orchestra or use samples.
There's very little use of real piano these days. Grand piano can sound like the meanest mofo on earth. It has tremendous power and character. No cheesy keyboard sound can stand the change against it.
If we talk about electric instruments... some of the coolest things happen to be Rhoads, Wurlitzer, Clavinet and other kinds of electric pianos. And of course electric organs like Hammond B3.
If you listen to some early 70's Miles Davis records or live performances... Chic Corea and Keith Jarrett played with more balls than all the keyboard dudes with leather and spikes combined. They used electric pianos with all kinds of effects... and a lot of distortion. Basically electric piano is like an electric guitar. And with the use of drive... it sounds like P-bass through stacks of Ampegs and guitar combined.
There's so many ways how to get different sounds.... I don't understand why most of the metal keyboardists use the same shit all the time?????????
Every modern synth has a some sort of Rhoads sound bank (although doesn't sound nearly as good as the real thing)... and plug that shit into a guitar amp.... some gain and reverb and voila. Sounds cool as hell... and it has BALLS."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

They can be great if used subtly, but that is rare. Usually, there's always some dorky noodling that wrecks the song. That can be true of guitar too in some cases, of course, but keyboards have an uncanny ability to screw up a good song. I completely agree with the Rainbow in the Dark example. Overall, I think that adding keys to a metal band is a big mistake.

Iron Maiden produced some great albums using keyboards. Seventh Son and Somewhere In Time are just brilliant. Some Black Metal (or so-called BM) bands have used keyboards to good effect, but there are also a lot out there that use them too much, and wind up sounding cheesy as fuck.Fuck ebay, fuck paypal

two more important words:
Yngwie Malmsteen
it never ceases to amaze me that musicians would talk shit about any sort of musical instrument. since when did music start being about being "tough" or "macho?" that's idiots talking.
apparently some metal guys are musicians, and some are not.the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
