Jon Lord and Don Airey may not be "metal," but they sure knew/know how to rock hard. Keyboards have a place in all music IMO.

Haha, thanks to both of you for quoting me so I couldn't go back and change that to "Two Words" once I realized I dicked the dog in the grammar department.

There is alot of metal bands that use keys very well...sometimes you don't even know the'yre' there or used very well when you can hear them. Many technical bands like Nocturnus, Cynic, Symbyosis, Lunaris, and etc..is fuggin' stellar!
+2, though my favourite has to be the Thresholds album... plus the Alter Reality video has lots of Warrior Pro footage

Mr Crowley, Revelation Mother Earth.....nuff said

I dig keys if used right. They cover a lot of ground and are a blast to harmonize with and trade offf solos but that ca be too progressive for some "Metal" I suppose...

This subject can go both ways. I think it's lame when metal bands trying to be really mean and aggressive use keys. Like Bodom. Keys totally kill that band for me because they're trying to be brutal, but yet, they have keys... Their keyboarding player is amazing though.

Wintersun has great use of keys, same with Malmsteen, and Friedman off his Scenes album.

So I guess in "shred" it's more tolerable than it would be thrash/heavy metal. Not saying some heavy metal bands can't use keys, but if they're going for a mean and aggressive sounds, keys aren't going to help. If they're looking for a more epic sound, keys can definitely add to the sound.

as I said before... it's all about the sounds and the approach... you can sound agressive with keys if you don't use those cheesy-plastic synth sounds and aren't trying to be the next Franz Liszt

Jon Lord used Hammond - balls
Zep had a lot of use for clavinet (specially No Quarter)- balls
Van Halen (cradle), Pink Floyd (money) etc. used Wurlitzer - balls
countless of hard rock bands used Rhodes - balls

it was the British space/prog/psychedelic rock movement (specially Pink Floyd and ELP) that brought the keys to rock music and influenced everyone... they used a lot of cool analog keys and whatnot wich had organic sounds. how the heck it all ended up with Final Countdown and cheesy black metal?

btw. Marty Friedman's Scenes album is New Age with guitar.... New Age = keyboards

I was listening to Ghost Reveries on my way home tonight when I was reminded of the Mellotron. I think it adds a lot to the last few Opeth releases.

Evergrey make good use of keys for atmospherics. And Lamb of God added some texture to their last album with 'em too.
