The kid was just communicating the way kids do these days. The guy isn't living in the 1960s or 1970s...in the 1980s he probably would have been called 'man'...now it is 'dude'.

The kid said 'ok. I didn't hear you.' The cop should have left at that point. The cop also should know that what he did was assault. That cop should be working at a car wash.

I'm not 100% but that looked and sounded like Baltimore City. No city is good but there is not enough money in the world for me to be a police officer in Baltimore. That cop was a little out of control but I probably would be too if I to deal wiht the shit in that city every day.

I use to skateboard religiously, and whenever a cop asked me to get off my board, I would. I hated it when my friends would be assholes and skate away, or tell them to fuck off. If a cop is being respectful to you, be respectful to him. If he's being disrespectful to you, put up with it because cops can pretty much do whatever they want. In this kids case, the cop was abusive though.

The kid did nothing wrong, I agree he had the wrong attitude but all he did was say "dude I didnt hear ya" and fat boy flys off the handle. If any MAN (cop or no cop) handled my son like that he'd a choice...deal with an ass kicking in any ring of his choice or he loses his job.

I have 2 kids about the same age as that boy and they both skateboard, this cop should not be serving the public if he can't relate to the public

Maybe his parents should teach the kid to not call a cop "dude". That's the problem. The officer took that as being disrespectful. You can't watch an episode of Cops and not see a cop getting pissed because someone called him "dude". Is it the right reaction? No, but it is what it is.

The kid might have done nothing wrong but his attitude is what made the cop react like that. Now he might have found another reason to go off on the kid but from what we've seen, it's because the kid called him dude. Does this kid call his parents dude? Call his teachers dude? I bet he doesn't. No reason to call a cop dude either.

If you do, you get whats coming to you. Threatening to beat up the cop is just silly.

As far as I know, there are no laws regarding saying the word DUDE in front of a police officer.

Besides, the cop was being an asshole long before the kid said DUDE. The cop did not react to that "disrespectful speech" - he just started out as an asshole (like most cops with which I've interacted...).

There is no law against calling a cop dude but then again, there is no law saying a cop can't yell the shit out of you either. Why put yourself up for that when all it takes is 1 word?

That's what I banged my head on for so long. Cops don't like being called pig, dude, man, guy, asshole, fuckwad, ect. Some of the old ones even see the word cop as slang and I've gotten yelled at calling one cop. So why do it?

I teach my kids to give the respect the badge deserves, not the person. Like I said, he's an asshole but he's wearing a badge and has the ability to fuck your life up, right or wrong. So I tell my kids to pick your battles wisely. If it's not worth it, don't do it.

Kinda sad really, because there is many good ones. I'd like to think I'm one of them..and one of you guys. "Cop" is what I am and always will be, and I'm proud of that. I just watched the video again. We don't know what happened before the camera rolled. The kid did have an attitude, plain and simple. "I don't have a dad"? What kind of lip is that? I will admit, I somewhat agree with the officer when he said the whole, "I'm not your father" thing. The kid got lippy. Notice how his friends are smart enough to shut the hell up?

Now the cop didn't need to put his hands on the kid but he told the kid to sit down. The kid didn't do it. As for as I know, the police have the right to restrain anyone. That's what he did. It was being an asshole, no doubt about it. But the kid was lippy.

Seems to me he was telling those kids they couldn't skate where they were skating. I'm not sure what kind of law that breaks but I'm sure there is some code for that. Not saying these kids are lawbreakers but it could be posted all over there that there is no skateboarding allowed. If that's the case, the kids are in the wrong.

I use to stick up for skaters that didn't have a place to skate, but that was the early 80's. Nowdays, there is a skatepark in just about every city. So they should take it there.

Before I get jammed up for this, I do think the cop was being an asshole. But so was the kid. The officer is in a position of authority and that's the fact. But he still is a bit of a prick.

I have nothing against police at all. There are some bad ones but I'd say 95% are some of the best men and women you'd ever meet. Doing a job I wouldn't do, that's for sure. For pay that sucks ass. A video like this makes all the cop haters come out but we need to realize that for every 1 cop like that, there are 1000 who are good, honest people.

But if they are as bad as some here have stated, next time your house gets burgled I'm sure you'll call a private detective, right? (OK, that's a bit of a stretch, but you get the point)

It's cool Bill - I'm just sharing my own experiences which happen to be mostly negative. I've always been honest, cooperative, and respectful toward cops and every single time have been treated like shit in return. I'm a 'normal' looking middle-class white kid who tries to speak proper English without coming off as an arrogant smartass - what reason could they possibly have to fuck with me besides just being assholes?

That's why in these 'after-the-fact analyses' I generally assume the cop is an asshole.
