  • Let's not forget divorce and birth control in this "pick and choose" religious society in which we live.

What I don't get is they want everyone to live to their standards when they themselves do not. That makes no sense to me.

If you don't do it, why the hell should they?
    I'm angry because you're stupid

The young woman can have all the old woman's cattle and stuff while she has to wear the old woman's name until death and also give it to her children.
Religion has no place sticking its nose to people's personal buisness.
That scenario is really more of an adoption than a marriage, unless you're saying that the old woman makes the young woman have sex with her.

But that reinforces the point that maybe we should use different terms for civil unions than for religious unions. "Marriage" is the term that Western society, which was very predominantly Christian-oriented until the 20th century, uses to denote a lifetime formal and religious union between a man and a woman. I'm sure that specific word was not used by cultures that existed long before the word was coined in the modern English language. It is just applied, loosely and inaccurately, to a number of somewhat similar arrangements.

"Marriage" is a word that means a sacred thing to religious people. If you're not religious, then why would that word matter to you? What's the problem with calling it a civil union, if it grants you the legal status you're looking for? Why would you even WANT to use a religious term to describe your non-religious personal union?

Separation of church and state would indicate that we should use different terms for the secular and religious aspects of a personal union.

Perfection is an ideal that we strive for, but nobody achieves. Marriage as concept is sacred and perfect, but Christians recognize that nobody is perfect. It's only non-Christians that expect perfection out of Christians.

By your logic nobody should play guitar unless they're a virtuoso because only perfect players should play guitar. See how silly that sounds?

The christians /religious people we are upset about would then be guitarplayers who think they're Steve Vai and expect everyone else to be a virtuoso at guitar, while being completely sub-par themselves.

And I can tell you, THAT IS A LOT of Christians / Religious people.
You took too much, man. Too much. Too much.

              • Basing your support of anything (or opposition of same) on religion, is a losing position.
please don't put it into words, 'cause I fear what you're thinking

                    • Ya know.. I wonder, can't help but do that. Are the prearranged marriage customs found in some countries going change...are we going to see parents start hooking up their son with someone elses son in exchange for a PC and a few servers? wow.. now that would be an odd custom.

Pick and choose, exactly. What cracks me up is when they're so against abortion, think it's against god, they don't believe in evolution, yet they think it's okay to use fertility drugs created in a lab when they can't have kids naturally. Maybe god didn't want them to have kids in the first place and that's why they can't. Nobody ever thinks of that, right?

Don't worry - I'll smack her if it comes to that. You do not sell guitars to buy shoes. You skimp on food to buy shoes! ~Mrs Tekky 06-03-08~

It's also said that god made man in his image... so god must also be straight, gay, bisexual, everything else that man is.

And god's been proven wrong already... why else would we get circumsized? If foreskin serves no purpose, why was it there to begin with?
