Class warfare among hard rock/metal listeners? Personally, I get complete scorn 99.9% of the time--from musicians and non-musicians alike--when I tell them I like loud, aggressive music with fast guitars. Exactly who would a metal snob be trying to impress? Sorry, doesn't work for me.
Very pertinent, regardless of the population you're looking at. Key is distinction from the hoi poi. Average looks, skills, income, power, prestige, intelligence, but "superior" opinions & tastes. Of all the attributes listed, the last is the most attainable, in any group.

      • I don't see how people can actually listen to DF and say they don't have skill. The originality I don't know, I don't know many new bands, maybe DF are just 1 of a new breed.

Judging song writing is subjective, but they definitly write songs, with dynamics, melodys, different sections and worked out lead parts, I enjoy the music on an emotional level and the solos are the icing on the cake to me

            • Seems to me there has been some "class warfare among hard rock/metal listeners" in this thread.

Everyone fast is always accused of speeding up the solos in the studio. Vinnie Vincent anyone? I don't know if he did or not but he was accused of it. Never saw proof he actually did it.

More envy. You know it's not healthy.

More joking there. But I like to discuss shit like this. Better than the "your guitar kicks ass!" threads. I think someone already said that in this thread but it's true. This is much more fun.

                • I like Dragonforce a lot. I enjoy their cds and if they can't play it live, I really don't care about that. Just don't go see them if that matters to you .

                  • I don't know if they can play live or not either. I was sidestage so most of the sound I was hearing was coming through the wedges. I was on Hermans side so his guitar was waaaay loud and some bass and drums were coming through the wedge. Didn't really hear the singer at all.

All bands sound like ass from sidestage.

                      • The shows I saw were fine. Yeah they missed some notes - you try playing that shit while drinking, running and jumping all over the place, and singing harmonies.

There are a few really bad clips of them playing when very drunk. Very reminiscent of the EVH and Schenker vids which have been posted here, though nothing was worse than the Schenker vid!

                          Some like to think so.

Me? Nope, I'm like school in the summer. No class.

Only if you're interested in making an impression. I've suffered through this discussion before. For me, the genuine issue is that a growing number of people are willing to set aside the real value of things to avoid offending anyone. This is called relativism, and it is one of the few truly evil things in the world.

Look, it's empirically demonstrable that diamond is harder than banana peel and it's empirically demonstrable that Dragonforce is an incompetent power metal band. Trying to apply a Chomsky-ite world view to the equation doesn't change the facts.

Wrong! (In case you haven't noticed, I'm just havin' some fun with this. I listen to plenty of shit music--and like it.)

                            • Man look what happens when horns goes awol jesus.

Look, the thread starts with a flavour of the month festival. Thats what all these bands are okay? Regardless if they're good or not, thats why they're there. To make people money. It's a corporate steamroller like any other tour. Enjoy it if you do!

Taste is a funny thing, I prefer depth but I'm not a close minded fool. I can see why people like DF, doesn't mean I'm not gonna hate them Like any thread on this bullshit, you want modern metal with melody and loads of cred? Nevermore Nevermore Nevermore Nevermore. Also, the new zimmers hole spells it out. That album rocks and has 'singing'. Cheeseburger breakdowns!!!

As for electronic music, rave stuff is for fags like df is for fags, ultimately enjoyed by most! But I prefer your darker dnb/break stuff. Current lp that gets spun in between metal is the new venetian snares, the song 'circle pit' is fucking metal as.

edit; found it on the tube, remember the start is for mixing in, reach the end for the climax that rules http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIIlzqfGoUw

                              • I stop looking at the forum for a couple days and this happens? My problem with Dragonforce is the same with a lot of other newer bands (power metal and death/black/br00talz metal especially): It all sounds the same to me. There are no hooks or melodies to pick out. All the tracks sound the same. They take one theme or sound and hammer it into the ground. That said, if someone likes it, whatever, just why I don't.

As for live performances, I think it reflects when you can't do it live, and were never able to. Some of our favorite acts (not naming them) are probably washed up, but at least they could carry themselves once. DF from what I've seen/heard could never do that.

And for the record, I like tasteful use of synthesizers and bands that bring them into their sound, like Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, Prince, Porcupine Tree, and Orgy to name a few. While I don't like a lot of electronica/dance, some of it is pretty good when it stands out.
