Anti Virus Software

What is your recommendation for anti-virus software? Norton seems to have too much going on and bogs down my computer. What's a better alternative, more computer friendly?

I use Avast. Don't know if it's good or not but I have not had a single virus since installing it.

Perfect timing for this thread. I decided not to renew w/ McAfee and was going to ask for opinions on Avast vs AVG, or any other free antivirus options before committing to anything. My brother-in-law the network guru gives Avast the nod, but I was curious what folks here think or have experience with.

The Avast I have is free too. A computer buddy put it in.

I like that it updates itself. Maybe they all do, I don't know. Seems pretty up to date. User friendly and I've never noticed it slowing down my system at all.

But after it updates it says "Virus Database Updated". I was in the other room and forgot I had my speakers pretty loud and when that went off I shit myself.

My vote's for Avast. I used AVG for a period of time, but it's system requirements went up since I last used it on this system, and Avast caught some stuff that Norton didn't.

I use AVG and have for quite a few years. The free edition seems to do just fine and I have no problems.

I use trend micro internet security. It's very good but has a pretty big memory footprint.

Not trying to be smart but how good can free anti-virus software be? Why wpould anyone ever pay for it if the best is free? Do you just download it from their site?

Course, I don't do porn like I use to either. Thats where they get you. Those damn free porn sites.

AVG is, IIRC, located in the Czech Republic or thereabouts. It was probably one or two guys when it started so they'd not have a massive need for cash. The giveaway is a basic edition for home use, they license the same for business use and sell additional software like adware removal tools, more full-featured virus scanners and the like. The free antivirus is a way for them to get onto your PC in hopes that you'll buy something else which you won't do if it doesn't do a good job for you. I'd say there's nothing to worry about with more well-known free software of this sort but then I generally trust capitalists.

Yeah. I'm weired like that too. My porn is guitars.

I want free-ware just as much as the next guy but I feel like I've been pressing my luck. It's like getting with hookers with no protection. Sooner or later something is gonna get you.
