I'm not really arguing either points. If it seems so, it's because I can see what those on the pro side are saying.

My take? Round up all the handguns and dump them in the ocean and make an artifical coral reef out of them. At least they will be doing something constructive that way.

All I know is the guy who broke into my house about 3 weeks ago also broke into 36 other houses before he was caught.

How many of those 37 houses had handguns in them? We'll never know because one wasn't used.

So did the chance of one of those owners having a gun deter him from his crime? Not at all. Remember this guy broke into houses between 4am and 6am when people are at home and asleep. The possibility of a gun in the house didn't deter him at all. Actually, I bet he got off on it. The risk, that is.

So I don't see them as a deterent at all.

Unless we start showing that we are packing. That's the only way guns are a deterant. Don't see many cops being held up.

How many of you will be pissed that you don't get to use your gun and shoot someone?

Come on, search your soul. You know there are a few out there who can't wait until they can use their gun on a criminal. It's like buying a hammer and never having a nail to pound in with it.

I'm sure most don't feel that way but you know there are some that do. I bet there are a few on this board that feel that way. They won't have the balls to admit it but I'm sure there are a few.

If he broke in and stole shit and left, I'm glad he didn't get shot. If he was breaking in and waking residents with rape or violence, well, different story.

Car thieves rarely get shot too...because they count on avoiding confrotation. I think your guy is a bad example.

OK, this is as honest as I can be. If a criminal enters my house, I'm going to assume he intends to harm me. Without hesitation, I will scatter his ass from wall to wall. Will I feel badly? i would never regret not shooting someone.

i would regret not have a gun to shoot someone harming, or worse to my family.

i do own guns, but i keep them at my parents. the odds of something happening to my family are slim. the odds of something happening of having guns in the house with kids is greater. shit just happens. it always been a battle inside me not to have a gun close by if needed. it is a no win.

I don't know if my guy is a bad example or not. My house has only been broken into twice. First time was a "friend", second time was this guy. Guns didn't deter this guy. Guns don't deter most criminals.

The only way guns will deter criminals is if we wear them like police do, or the old cowboys did. That's the only way. No other way will work.

Most of the people on here are decent people. But you know there are those that can't wait to use that 9mm they just bought at Wal-Mart. You know there are. That's the kind of guy that scares me to death.

I said in a post above, I will not let my kids play at a house that has guns. Period. Call me lame or whatever, I call it being a good parent. You can teach your kids about guns but you never, ever know how they will react when the parents are not there and they want to show off in front of their friends.

I do think that it deters folks- But you'll never know for sure, again, proving a negative. I do recall reading a study done asking prisoners what they were more afraid of, armed civillians or cops, and the answer was overwhelmingly NOT the cops. Take it for what it's worth.

Anyone who says they'd be happy to shoot someone....well, shit. My Grandfather was no shrinking violet, and he killed people in wartime. He never came out and said "That sucked" but you could tell he wasn't happy about it. I've watched animals die, hard. Whether someone "deserves" it or not, I think the vast majority of non-sociopath tough talkers would vomit immediately after having to shoot someone.

And there's no shame in that. It's being human. Sometimes humans have to do things that they don't want to do, desperately don't want to do. That's called being an adult.

I think you're over-reacting re: letting kids play in houses with guns. But under no circumstances would I call you "lame" or anything else. You have a concern. You're a parent. That's your job, and that's your call. Neither I nor anyone else has the right to tell you differently.

But it's not the only thing to worry about. My kids are 7 and 10. Wait til they can drive, then I'll really worry.

I guess what I would do to see if private citizens owning guns is a deterant would be to look at the statistics. How high is crime in city A? A city where X% of people have handguns.

Then I would look at a smiliar city in Europe where they don't have private ownership of handguns. I would look at their crime statistics and see how they add up.

I already know how they add up. I'm sure you do to.

I think if guns detered crime, we wouldn't have shit for crime. How many guns are owned in the US? How many murders did we have in the US last year? There is a pattern there.

Then I'll ask GOR this. When was the last murder in your town in Belgium? I bet it was a while ago. Just a guess though.

I'm sure someone will come along and say it's social or whatever. We are a violent nation since we had to fight for our independence or some kinda shit like that. I don't buy it. European dudes and American dudes are more similar than different.

the sad thing is, and to keep in mind when your kids do get to drive. the odds of them boosting a beer or few from your fridge or booze from your bar is more likely to get them killed than having a gun in the house. you ask your kids friends parents if the own a gun, but do you ask if they have a stock bar? are there more deaths by drunks than by gun shots? i believe in the teenage years this is true.
