Gryphon,
Good news. Glad it worked out good for you guys!
As for the ethics debate. You posted a thread about filesharing, this turned into an ethics debate about filesharing. Not too big of a strech to see how that happened.

Filesharing - Give us a chance!

Well, here's the verdict for this time around...
The record label was notified of the existence of this stuff, and they as well as we immediately filed a complaint with the company hosting the files, and we just got this email back:
"Hello,
thank you for informing us about this violation of our Terms of Use. We have removed the files you have specified from our servers.
Furthermore we have added the files to our blacklist, so we will not accept an
upload of the same files anymore.
Thank you for your cooperation."
I guess we dodged this one for now - I know the album's going to be out there on fileshare, I just want to be on equal ground, where people can actually buy it legit as well as download it. I guess it's all going to be about building expectations for the release as far as we're concerned.
Thanks for all of Your support and good ideas. I didn't mean for this to turn into a general ethics thread, but such are the ways of the Internet. Thanks for sharing this with me!

Here's a fun challenge. Have someone from Human Resources management post that they encourage Internet surfing during work hours. I'm anxious to see the results.
I'm going to assume this was directed at me since I made the comment that it's no problem to surf the net at work.
I understand that it's a problem at some IT places and whatnot. Places where you actully work 8 hours a day.
I don't "work" 8 hours a day. I'm AT work 8 hours a day but out of those 8 hours I only really work 2 to 2 1/2 hours of that 8 hours. Just the nature of the business I'm in.
As far as surfing the net, the computer guy knows exactly how many hours the employees surf the net at work. He even came up to me a while ago and asked what this JCF thing was. He wanted to know what it stood for. I told him and he said "cool" and walked away.
When I first got this job once my boss would walk into my office I'd try to minimize the screen and show I was not surfing the net. He responded that it's not a big thing to surf the net, as long as you are not looking up "questionable" material. Material that won't offend someone. Other than that, he said you have to do something to pass the time.
As for getting a HR person to create an account and post here just to prove a point? I highly doubt the HR lady at my work would do that. Sorry.Last edited by Bengal; 07-08-2008, 08:25 AM.

Metallica or anyone else on this board cannot speak for the masses. Some bands would never even be heard of without fileshare. Some bands have nothing good to say about the recording industry. Google Tom Scholz and Celtic Frost.
We all sin and break the law everyday. When we speed we are committing crime. We even buy fuzzbusters to help us break the law. If crime is crime then we should enable the death penalty for anyone 10 mph over the speed limit.
This thread is going no where guys, we are just kicking a dead horse that has been kicked so many times.

Another thing I don't think I've seen mentioned...
Having your album spread over the internet for free is more than your record company could spend on PR for all the artists it has.
I could list 100 bands that I purchased CDs of that I would have never heard of before.

Yep Matt..music straight from the heart will convey great!
Look at the production and money put into that shell of a man now and listen to that crap he's been puttin' out. Ozzy wouldn't even resemble metal if it wasn't for Zakk in that last 14 years. I remember Zakk saying I have to keep reminding Ozzy who he is when when he's writing. I don't think Ozzy listen to that advice for quite some time...he's done.
You can almost see the strings that are holding him up.."Sharon..Bubbles..Bubbles..I'm the prince of darkness I don't want any fucking bubbles". I betcha even that line was scripted by Mrs Ozzy.
That show was the worse thing he ever did..Maybe just one show..a peek. Now we all know he's just a pickled, feeble old man..on a short leash..yeeshh..

I like how Ozzy stated it one time. The first album was recorded in a couple weeks on an 8 track and sounded great. After that they had to rent out some major castle or something because the stones recorded there or something and it sucked.

Yeah Bengal. People buy what they hear all day on the radio to, fro and at work everyday in constant rotation. They hear it so fuggin' much..it turns them into zombies for record companies. All that is gold surely does not glitter!!
I mean "Popular" as bands with staying power and duration that many "bigger" bands have. The mainsteam made metal accesable..fasionable again with these Emo- Core crap. Kids traded in their FUBU-wear and DJ equipment for a guitar, black nail polish, eyeliner and hair products...just like the 80's without talent! I have HHB tapes when it came back on in 2004. All the bands were TRUE metal. Now the same fuggin thing happened as the early 90's. I quit watch HBB because the big wigs took it over again wirth their bullsit!. Ther's hardly any metal on it, with the exception of JP inteverview between horrible cooki cutter BS! Anybody could do this core-trend..much like rap or nu. Now, kids can start a band, get a myspace page..get enough hits and fake friends and breakthrough and act like rock stars, even without a band. Emo is to metal what Hair was to metal.. what Rap was to metal..what Nu was to metal ..all trends with expiration dates. True metal is timeless. Put on Trivium...Hey, I give 'em a C+ for effort, Black Tide a D..but then put on the new Testament for example..see what I'm sayin. That's metal. That will always be metal! Oh, but Bill they are good for being that young...That's bullcrap! ALL metal bands were young and some point and sounded much better than that 25 years ago. Hey, but bless 'em..y'know at least kids have a choice, instead of everyone speaking in ebonical tongues..that was so fuggin' wrong..it was patehtic!:ROTF:
These kids are diggin' guitars just as we did when we were young. Playin' the same shit we did..thanks to Guitar hero I, II, III, IV, V ..ect..Hey, whatever works..
Just look at the trends that came and went on American Idol. People vote for what is popular. Do you think those two "rocker" dudes would have a chance during the ebonic plague. No, that wasn't marketable. They wouldn't even gotten to Hollywood..baby..dawg. I can't believe I watch that shit sometimes. Well, they wife was into it..sorta...that sheep!
My wife HATED "cookie monster" vocals 6 years ago. Now she thinks 80's metal ..even great clean singers like Jorn Lande or Russel Allan sounds gay"!!"That sounds old..and gay..like Bon Jovi or whitesnake". Me.."But you loved that stuff"..Her "Yeah, back then"..Me "Yeah, 6 years ago..you only like it because that's what me and your son do all day". She would have hated my stuff 6 years ago. Ummm ..not really..because I am pretty awesome!
But she knows the difference between talented "gruff" singers and Screamo shit..that shit is just fucking irritating.
Whenver I see some fat, sweaty Emo-fuck screaming in the microphone..I wish someone shoved a dick in his mouth to shut him the fuck up!Last edited by horns666; 07-08-2008, 01:33 AM. Reason: SMOKING A BOWL..TYPOS..YOU DEAL WITH IT!..FUGGUMS!!

Bill,
I guess we need to define "popular". In your sense, I see what you are saying.
But back in the day, Round and Round was a top 20 hit. Motley had hits like Home Sweet Home. Def Leppard had huge hits. I don't see any metal bands doing that now. There are a few but they are fringe metal bands like Nickleback and Stone Sour and bands like that.
I also see what you are saying about Slayer and Maiden but last time I checked, Slayers last album had not gone gold yet. It might have by now but I have not seen it. It's a damn good album but still, it hasn't moved over 500,000 units in the US. But then again, Slayer never moved a ton of units. I'd be more interested to see numbers on Maiden. But I'm sure they are not at the platinum level.
So it all depends on the definition of popular. I usually say liked by a large sum of people. As much as I hate the radio, people buy the crap they spew on there. So I guess they like it.
