I'm tired and have a head ache...work related.

Did some upgrades in one of our many closets and a whole Lab of machines.
Installed two switches, patch panel "terminated" wires, made a crossover cable, troubleshooted 3 machines had no connectivity, oh joy.
The closet, is in a corner with very little room to move and work in and around, very cramped and little visibility.
Kinda like working on the old Escorts and Citation vehicles, very tight.
Tomorrow I get to update and install the software in that Lab, that's cool and something to look forward to.
Friday, I get to do it all over again in another Lab.

Got a headache, neck and shoulders are achey and my ears are ringing.
Guess what? I love it.
Work with great people and finally after many years in a professional environment among professional people.

Yep, PC's are every where in every environment and somebody has got to manage and service them.
We were talking the other day, its amazing just how saturated and depended our society is on digital technology. Remove a handful of wans and lans in several larger metropolitan areas, it would be near chaos. Banks, hospitals, Exective and HR offices, IP providers providing cell phone services, e-mails, text messages, even the daily insignificant stuff thats never thought of much and most take for granted are digitally driven. Which means, its on a server somewhere and it runs the show or whoever manages it.
Most military (not all) scenarios even mission critical ones are digitally dependent.

Its a shame really, it least to me anyways, that we've become that dependent on it.
It can be a blessing or a curse, it has its pro's and con's, theres stuff about it I like and stuff I don't.

If people only knew, theres no such thing as "private" anymore.
Theres nothing private about us, whatever it is regardless big bro can access it nearly instantly.
When I hear someone say, "I keep that infomation private and reserved to myself."
I want to tell them, not anymore, and so I don't because I don't want to screw them up believing such is real. Everybody needs a fanatasy I guess. Its all servers, satellites and towers these days.

I was thinking the same thing!

On the radio here something about a woman walked in on a dude watching pron on the PC and he was snapping one off. Anyways, there were these women calling in sayin they flick the bean in the bathroom whenever they get all stressed out! Most said around 3 times a week, while others were almost 3 times a day which were women in IT.

You get a handful of older teacher/professors that's not exactly computer suavey, that gets annoying, if your not baby sitting them your repairing and reimaging their machines. The ones fresh out of college are better at taking care of their machines. The students? OMG, how I'd love to smack them in the head. In my particular setting, the students are far worse than the staff/teachers/professors.

I constantly get asked mostly by staff, "why can't we use this software and that software?" They know it has to approved by the board and technology department. Everybody is looking for something in these environments all the time. "You scratch my back and I'll scratch yours." Yeah right, I'll lose my job and you will still have yours. Sorry for your luck, keep looking. I got priorities man, I got my guitars to look after.

I use to do internet support and that was a nightmare.
Some of the calls I received were truly unbelievable.
I really think before anyone buys a PC they should have to pass a user test.
If he or she passes they get to buy the PC, if not, no PC untill you pass the test.
I've had people call, "I can't see anything on the monitor."
I had to tell them they had to turn on the monitor.
"My mouse isn't working." Is it plugged in correctly?
A test that proves one knows what he's doing, smart enough to use the machine, besides downloading stuff.

Oh, the ones that really got to me were the ones who thought they knew a bit about computers. My last academic job was working for a physics and maths dept. and boy did they think they knew about computers.

Look prof. you may know a thing about non Newtonian fluids but don't try and talk into the mouse for fuck sake. Also please don't put the password on a post-it note on the screen. But the chemists were the worst. I vant linux and I vant it to do everyzing that I say, ja!

But I was never less than impressed at the students ability to fuck up the lab machines. No matter how hard we locked them down, they'd fuck them up.

Ghost was a blessing every summer, squirt a fresh new build over and then watch as the clever little cunts buggered them all up in the first week of term. Or more usually the lecturers would tell you 3 days before the start of teaching that they simply must have this piece of software on the machines or the world will end, even though you gave them a deadline 8 weeks before for any software updated the build needed...
