I'm more or less playing the devils advocate because I really truly don't think any of you guys would have pulled out your guns, I REALLY don't.
Are you sure NONE of us would have? You seem to forget that there is a bunch of us that not only would have, but would have been obligated to do something. Sure, there'd be some paperwork but....
And they're charging him with 2nd degree murder ? The guy thought enough to bring a knife with him, so it was pre planned. He just didn't know who was for lunch until he got there. I'd say its 1st degree all the way. Unfortunately, there will be the mentally impaired defense happening, which will drag the whole legal process down for years. There were plenty of witnesses, so its a lock this freak did the deed. Its a shame we can't just throw him in an alligator pit and move on.
Its amazing how people turn stuff like this into political rants to garner interest in membership of their socialist movements. Anywhere around the globe, a fellow passenger would have taken out their gun and blown this guys head off. The reason this doesnt happen in other countries is for that very reason. In places like Switzerland where everybody and their grandma is packing heat, no one would ever dare do something like this.
this guy was a complete psycho. Do you think that consideration would have even entered his head? He didn't seem too concerned when he realised he'd been locked in the bus, he just went back to what he was doing, not thinking about that the cops would be there soon, or any of the repercussions of his actions
I read that some of the Royal Cdn Mounted Police radio clips were leaked on the net (including youtube) and one constable did report that the guy was eating the victim. What could possess someone to do something like this?
The killer was a newspaper deliverer in Edmonton up until mid July. He has a wife. Just crazy bizarre.
Moderators there seems to be a technical malfunction with the board. I keep going to the general section and clicking on the link to take me to the thread about the Greyhoud bus killing and keep winding up in the thread about the DC gun banning.
Spiral, I see your point, but since you posted after I mentioned that I HAD ridden a Greyhound with a gun, you can see why I might have felt you were including me.
Trust me, the last thing I would want to do is use that gun, because I didn't have a concealed carry permit, and I know I'd be facing weapons charges if I did it no matter the right or wrong of using it. I had it so I could defend my life if I had to - because there ARE a lot of freaks riding the Greyhound.
But if someone was getting stabbed in front of me, and I could get a clear shot at the stabber to try and save the victim, yes I would try to save that person's life by taking out the other guy. In this case everybody else bailed off the bus so chances are someone with a gun would have had that shot.
There's nothing macho about that idea. I would try to save the other person's life if I could. Now if I thought I could wrestle the knife away from the stabber, THAT would be macho. I wouldn't try that, I've had a stroke and my left side is weak.
But my left hand is still strong enough to rack the slide on my 9mm, and I've shot at the range enough to feel confident in hitting the guy from the range of inside a bus.
I get your point in general though, but consider that if someone says they'd shoot the guy it may not be bullshit. Plenty of us have been raised hunting, and while shooting a human is a lot more profound than killing a deer, taking out a threat is a pretty straightforward idea.
You might not like the idea of a world with guns in it, but the world has had gins for 500 years, and it'll have them until we come up with laser guns or something more deadly. It's the dark side of human nature to an extent, but as long as that dark side exists, then people in the middle who just want to defend themselves will also have to use them.
Don't demonize everybody who sees a reason to own a gun. I've owned one most of my life and I'm 50 now, but I've never pointed one at a human being. I've fired one at a range, indoor or outdoor, or against a hillside backdrop so I knew rounds weren't flying through random air. That describes most law-abiding citizens who own guns.
If you don't want to own a gun, that's your right. Don't give the law-abiding gun owners shit though, because if you ever come to harm from a gun, chances are it'll be from a criminal, not one of us.
Other than that, yeah, we have to agree to disagree.
