Personally, if I was the kid's parents, I'd rather be told he was stabbed by some loony with a knife on the bus, who was promptly shot to death himself by an armed rider, than be told the guy had a good hour or more to cut off his head and carve him up like a Thanksgiving turkey.
Lerx - I thought the article said the bus was in motion? I didn't read where people were leaping from a moving bus. The driver had to pull over and let people off, after he figured out what the 30 other people were yelling at him about.
The point is, you can't approach the victim to ascertain his condition until after you do something about the stabber, right? So it's justified to shoot him so you can get to the victim to SEE if you can help him.
I have to admit though, when I saw you posted on this thread, the first thing that came to mind was your sig statement!Ron is the MAN!!!!

Lerxcat ,
On a deserted freeway 15 km out of town, I imagine the process took about a minute, Newc.

Lerx - Yeah, that sig line is hilarious most of the time (saw it on a t-shirt site) but at times like this....it's like Anthrax coming out after 9/11 and saying they didn't hink their name was "cool" anymore
Check out some freakyness that was posted on the ADA Depot forum:
Check this out, it's about the a$$ in the bus in Canada who beheaded someone:
http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=433_1217616096
Look at the last name of Lucy (the reporter in the video), Johan van Oldenbarnevelt was a dutch partiot and has been beheaded, weird stuff man..you don't see that name that much anymore these days.

Jay, I think you're missing the context of my earlier post and my reply to Newc.
Someone said something about a passenger with a gun not having a clear shot with other passengers on the bus.
I said the other passengers got off the bus right away.
Newc said "Wasn't the bus moving?"
I said it probably took about a minute for the driver to pull over and the passengers to get off the bus.
The point being that it might take about a minute before everybody was off the bus and you had a clear shot. If you tried to shoot the guy sooner than that, you might hit somebody else by mistake. After that, you'd only hit the stabber, or maybe the victim, who was pretty much fucked anyway.
You mention the victim's family, and you have a point. But if the gunman shot before the line of fire was clear, and killed another passenger instead, THAT passenger's family would be devastated as well.
So you would have to wait until you had a clear line of fire where you wouldn't hit an innocent passenger.
Hope that clears things up for you.

From what I've heard, the stabbing started in the guy's neck, so there's no chance of saving the guy.
And cut it out with the all the macho "I would have shot him" bullshit. We all know you'd be trying to get out of that bus as fast as possible.
And if you had shot him, I strongly believe you would be convicted of manslaughter/3rd degree murder. Nothing gives you the right to shoot another human being - everyone has the right to pursuit of happiness. Committing a crime does not forfeit that right.Scott

And I don't think the Canadian Constitution guarantees the right to the pursuit of happiness, especially if it involves killing someone in their sleep for no other reason than to do it.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
