It was amazing to watch. I grew up swimming competitively, and that last leg is the kind of thing you might expect to see in lower-level competition, but to close like that on a world record holder?? Insane! You could tell how shocked Rowdy Gaines was as he called it. And Phelps is so fucking awesome! You could tell he wasn't thinking at all about how it keeps him on track for 8 golds. He was totally in the moment, just going nuts like he probably did at a meet when he was 12.

This is why I love the Olympics and don't give a shit about the politics. I care about Darfur and Tibet, but don't punish athletes or miss out on some inspiring performances because the committee made a bad choice or didn't have a crystal ball 12 years ago.

I like some of the Olympics, but the TV coverage is pissing me off. Instead of showing medal rounds for sports like fencing (USA won gold, silver, and bronze in women's sabre!) they spend hours talking about what MICHAEL PHELPS!!!!!!! ate for breakfast this morning and showing an endless amount of prelim and semifinal swim races.

The only reason that guy is winning so many medals is because they give out too many medals for swimming. Imagine if they did that with every sport - the Olympics would last 3 years!

I also find it sad that Togo currently has more medals than my country. We've been demolished in absolutely everything. There's a section in the local paper dedicated to the Olympics and it's so depressing to read. All it is anymore is "Canada loses this", "Team Canada gets stomped", "Canada get's Their Asses Handed to Them On A Platter" etc.

I also find it odd that so many records are falling. Is it all due to these new suits? I doubt it. I'm sure the suit could shave off a few tenths of a second but 4-5 seconds? Nope, I don't buy it.

And who else thought Phelps acted like a douchebag after the 200M Butterfly? He won a gold but didn't get the time he wanted so the threw a hissy fit in the pool. What an ass.

I think drugs are getting harder and harder to trace.

But maybe I'm just old and grumpy and just a tad too suspicious.

I think Phelps stated that he threw his goggles because they got filled with water when he dove in and were killing his eyes the whole race. But yes, he felt he could have done better without the distraction. And +1 on the 12 year old chinese gymnasts, wtf?

Bengal, today's swimming is like a top science, the new suits help a lot but pretty much in every month discoveries are made how to improve the actual technique... it's ridiculous how much effort are put into developing the ultimate way of swimming. Every little change how you move your toe for example can change the results drastically.
Some day when there's no more improvements to be made the record breaking will stop.

As far as I know Mike was little pissed because his swimming glasses broke in the middle of the race, it's a pretty big distraction when water starts coming into your eyes.

I use to swim in Jr. High and High School. That's the reason I never wore goggles. I tried them once and the same thing happened. I think I heard him say that they shifted as soon as he dove in the water. That happened to me and I just pulled them down around my neck and kept swimming.

I'm sure there will always be advances in the sport. But this seems like almost too much too soon.

Imagine what Phelps could do in the freestyle if he didn't have that little hitch in his stroke. Sure he's fast but not fluid at all.

And I still think he acted like a bit of a baby after the butterfly.

But for these swimmers, the time is more important than the medal. I can understand that.
