Yes, earlier, but it doesn't seem like he does as much nowadays. I guess it may be different with a band like Slayer that knows what sound they're looking for and can pretty much do things on their own without much guidance from him.

I actually listened again to "Load" today, as a bit of background music while I tidied the house then read the new Guitarist magazine and I quite enjoyed it. Funny how I know all the words, melodies etc so well despite thinking I hate the album! Maybe I like it more than I realise.
Thanks, I really appreciated this comment somehow.

I've noticed this thing a lot, a lot of the load bashing has gone away. Cuz they are actually really good albums, the songwriting is fantastic and there is some really out-there stuff on there, and it's pretty refreshing, I still haven't heard many stuff or maybe anything at all that sounds like those albums.

I mean take Outlaw Torn for example, just wickedly awesome.

I know AC/DC didn't think Rubin was much of a producer, but at least Ballbreaker was still a kick ass album.
Rick is not a very hands-on producer with established acts. I know Kerry King said that Rick was hardly in the studio and they did most of the work themselves.

    Sounds better live.

I think you guys should hold your judgement until the album comes out. All we've heard are raw live tracks and a poorly mixed studio version.

It didn't really do to much for me either , but I also can't remember the last album I bought - where I enjoyed every track !!!So I'm holding out some hope for the rest of the album.

They started tuning down on the black album... a couple songs were E, some were Eb, Sad But True was in D. James said D was the coolest tuning for guitar and he would love to stick with that, except he didn't like how the strings got all floppy. Guess he didn't know about heavier gauge strings at the time.
    Load and Reload were Eb.
St. Anger was Drop C... not sure if anything was straight D or if it was just Drop C all the way through.

I just heard the new Metallica on the radio this weekend. Holy shit, it is terrible. It's like someone took a sampler/looper program and copy/pasted a Metallica song together. It is so dorkily predictable at every step of the way.

Kirk Hammett is the luckiest guy alive. He is such a terrible guitar player and he get's to be in Metallica. What a joke. His solos are the worst sort of cheeseball bad garage band wanking there is. It's funny when you go to Guitar Center and these metalhead wannabe's play Metallica - they can't play the rhythm guitar parts but they can nail the solos note for awful note.

They still have a record contract because they sell millions.. Another thing why would someone buy their shit if they didn't like it.
If that's how you assess music then Britney Spears Roolz.

Move on. Find another band that is doing it the way it used to be, and support that band. However, there's no need to bag on Metallica. Yes, they were the shit back in the day. They paved the way for others just like Sabbath and Maiden did. They grew up and got slower, just like Sabbath and Maiden did.

When you blaze a new trail, it's only a matter of time before someone follows you down it. The tricky part is knowing when you're the old guy doing 40 in the 65 zone.
If Metallica already know they're that guy, and have moved onto slower roads, WTF is all the crying about?
Simple - Metallica of old were just SOOO fuckin good, and they got shit real fast. People still expect and HOPE for them to be able to write the genius stuff they used to.

As for the downtuning thing - apart from the sludgefest of St Anger which was clearly a trend chasing thing, I think most bands detune as they get older simply because the singer can't hit the high notes any more.
I just wish AC/DC would tune down, so Brian Johnson didn't have to try and scream all the fuckin' time.
