ummm, yeah....or so THEY say. i have never gotten past the furry underwear and caveman costumes. with manowar, i hang my head in shame....i regret the use of the phrase "TRUE american metal"....

well, there seems to be a lot of crying about plain, ol' bad songwriting!!!! i know that's what i am crying about. so what if the tunes are slower or "different" as long as they are GOOD tunes!!!! the particular song in this thread seems to meander through several "periods" in metallica's career and NEVER achieves the potential that it seems to comes to.
it would be great if metallica knows they are too old to 65 on the highway, but i think pride may be the issue....living up to that name "METALLICA"...the name that used to inspire TRUE american metal!!!!!!
i think they should change their name and put out albums that are good and solid. if they don't want to change their name, then they should embrace their awesome past, and move beyond it, into their future.

So if Metallica's new stuff doesn't sound like their old stuff, maybe you guys need to let go of them instead of asking them to cling to what you want them to do?
Move on. Find another band that is doing it the way it used to be, and support that band. However, there's no need to bag on Metallica. Yes, they were the shit back in the day. They paved the way for others just like Sabbath and Maiden did. They grew up and got slower, just like Sabbath and Maiden did.
When you blaze a new trail, it's only a matter of time before someone follows you down it. The tricky part is knowing when you're the old guy doing 40 in the 65 zone.
If Metallica already know they're that guy, and have moved onto slower roads, WTF is all the crying about?

Also, masking slower playing with LOWER tuning? Lastly, there's plenty of times where they play faster than on the record, even today, even the old stuff.
1) One of the world's EX best rhytm guitarist... :P
2)I think they dropped the tuen 1/2 in order to sound more "modern" and that's a part of the problem, the way they changed their sound, slower and detuned, another sign of the barbarization of the nu metal of the 90s, compared to the 80s.
Still, now live they play even slower than in S&M, and it's just for the orchestra, I've four versions of creeping death live, '88, '91, '96 and '01, the downfall of their performance is significant.

I actually listened again to "Load" today, as a bit of background music while I tidied the house then read the new Guitarist magazine and I quite enjoyed it. Funny how I know all the words, melodies etc so well despite thinking I hate the album! Maybe I like it more than I realise.

Originally posted by Cuthbert View PostI disagree, the last time I went to their concert, last month, they play master of puppet MUCH slower than in the disc, I think around 180 bpm, while the original record is 220 bpm, in order to "mask" this, they detune the instruments one step down.
This was true 10 years ago, you can listen that song played in S&M, it's clearly slower than in the 80s.

Tool still rocks and their music evolves and stays good.
Metallica does not rock anymore and their music devolves to a crappier much simpler genre of craptastic!

Guys - no one's asking Metallica to play as fast as they did as kids.
All we want is some good heavy music, and we haven't got that since at least TBA. IMO the best songs Metallica have done in recent years have been stuff like Mama Said (is that right? I dont listen to the album much) and Low Man's Lyric - I actually think they're good songs. The heavier stuff they do is just shit, like they're not interested in being a heavy metal band any more.

Got proof of that? Cuz I've never heard anything close to what you're claiming there, and I've pretty much seen and heard it all.
