Of course people will buy it. People buy all kinds of lame, weakass music every day. That's what top 40 is for. That doesn't mean it's any good. Metallica became successful, and popular, among people mainly with genre-specific tastes. In other words, metal fans. In fact, when Metallica became successful in the mainstream, they had already begun to dilute the sound that had endeared them to so many metal fans.

Do you seriously think that if an unheard of, unsigned band put out this record, that record execs would be banging on their doors, throwing money at them? Fuck no they wouldn't.

So they're not angry any more - is that an excuse to write shit music? Iron Maiden, Motorhead, AC/DC, Judas Priest all made PLENTY cash from their music but I don't see them turning into fucking limp wristed homos (Rob may be a homo but his music is not limp wristed).

Anyway - from what I can gather Metallica ARE still angry. Have you seen "Some Kind of Monster"? Looks to me like, despite their money, none of them are very happy with life. So the "anger" thing doesn't really come into it at all, they simply can't write a good song any more - their money simply means they do not give a flying fuck about the fans who still buy this shit. Fuck 'em.

As well, with the endless stream of "Metallibabies" (as Mustaine once dubbed them), everyone and their mother is playing like Metallica used to play. To keep themselves from sounding like "everyone else", they changed.

AC/DC and ZZ Top can put out the same album year after year and it works because no one expects them to advance into more technical areas.

However, it's slightly different than Thrash. You can't put out the same E-to-F-to-E-to-Bb riffs and use the same tired old swept arpeggios for decades and stay fresh. Yngwie proves that. If you start at the top technically, you have nowhere to go but down, or you stay with what you're doing and coast into oblivion like so many others have done.

If you want to stay on top of the pile, you change direction. While they're not on top of the Thrash pile anymore, they are on top of a different pile. Regardless of whether anyone here considers it crap or not is irrelevant - they're on top and that's all that matters.

Anthrax's new album any good? Haven't heard anything about them in years, except that they're playing the same stuff they've been playing since 1985.

I liked Black, but not as much as Justice, and I thought Justice was great. No, you can't hear Jason's bass. As I understand it, they recorded the whole album without bass tracks and brought him in after the fact.

I was never a fan of Metal Ballads like Nothing Else Matters or Unforgiven. The music wasn't bad, and neither were the lyrics, it was the vocal tone.
Testament's The Legacy from Souls of Black had the power behind the vocals all the way through that Unforgiven lacked, and needed.

But, I don't fault Metallica for jumping ship from Thrash to whatever it is they're calling whatever it is they do. Thrash is a young man's sport. Well, although I hate "new" Metallica I must admit I love Kirk's early playing to fucking death. What he did on songs like Ktulu was just awe inspiring. Maybe he didn't have the technical skills of guys like Skolnick, but he was a better guitarist back then IMO than near enough anyone other than Murray/Smith.

Slayer is still off the hook, for better or worse, their shit sounds exactly the same now as it did 15 years ago. They may not be the most technical guitarist in the world, but they have stayed true to their roots as well as can be expected IMHO. I would have changed my sound long ago out of sheer fucking boredome. They have not.
