Apparently, someone was listening to Mason Williams' "Classical Gas" when they wrote the first part of the song.

      Lars drumming...is awful!
Is it me, but he keeps losing his timing, not to mention just bashing the hell
out of the snare with no real dynamic.
What do I know? I'm a Rush fan...
And Hammet is just wanking, the basic structure of the tune is there, but I just can't stomach it. There are twenty guitarists in my neighborhood alone that sound better.
(I'm not one of them, in case anyone asks).

I heard it a couple more times flipping channels on the radio while driving. I liked it less than I did the first time, when I was websurfing & half-listening. Those first 4 minutes are really tedious when you give it your undivided attention.

I also have to agree with what Rob & others said about Lars. He's clearly gotten even worse, though at least the overall drum sound is better than it has been recently. He's a huge handicap for the band, especially at a time when the drumming bar is being raised constantly by committed musicians who give a shit.

The listener comments on one station that took calls were mixed, just like here, but most liked it better than their other recent stuff. I almost called in to at least thank them for the 7 Nickelback-free minutes. Hey, at least I didn't change the channel like I do for 90% of the shit they play these days, so that's kind of an endorsement, right?

I'm trying not to bandwagon... I'm really not but I agree it gets worse after the first few times you hear it. The song meanders for a few minutes... what is this crap and who is this whiny bitch at the mic? The guitar is meandering as hell. The lead is alright, kind of uninspired and repetitive. I have to agree with the Classicla Gas comment.

Then it finally gets going it sounds decent. Drumming is solid, not great. But Kirk's solo and leads just sounded thin as hell compared to the rest. The rest is pretty solid sounding. Lar's vocals are not very strong though. Get back to being pissed up and scream more man, this isn't fun to listen to. This could of been done on it's own really so we can skip the first part and get to the beef. It could be worse I guess, as I said earlier. The song writing on Load was better imo though, scary as that sounds. The production and overall sound is just about Black Album quality. I guess it is better than most crap, but I don't know how many more plays I'll take before becoming sick of it. Even now I want to go throw on Puppets or AJFA over this.

So...this is Metallica? Wondered what they sounded like.
I'm hoping that this song was the radio song, and the rest of it's better. It's supposed to more thrash like the older stuff, but we've all heard that before. Glad they got rid of Bob Cock, and I hope Rick Rubin breathes new life into them. I literally have their first 4 albums worn out, and I'm dying for some decent material from them. I remember back in the day it was Metallica fans vs. Megadeth fans. Well gotta say, the last 2 Megadeth albums were pretty damn good IMO.

and what gives you the idea that the albums before AJFA weren't James and Lars' "fault". Fleming didn't produce shit, he did exactly what James and Lars told him to do... he was a hired sound engineer, that's all.

This makes no sense. The very first thing that popped in my head when I heard Lars snare at the beginning was an electronic triggered beat from this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bd2B6SjMh_w, (just the 4 count intro) took 2 hrs to find this dam song, having no idea wtf I was looking for.

I didn't hear Metallica at all, so that can't be good lmao. Now this is all I hear...

RD needs to get James his Explorer back so he can write some metal.

I hope the record is full of yodelling, dodgy vibratos, and plodding drums.

They've done worse. Sounds like the radio song, which are always the worst tracks, aren't they? And I'll second some comments that it's 10x better than most of the radio rock that's out there. Problematic song, but it made me smile in parts, I'll be honest.
