Heard it on the radio during my lunch break. I didn't enjoy it at all. When the heavy part kicked in I think it sounded like some reworked riffs from "Wherever I May Roam" and "One". The "Mandatory Metallica" on the radio every hour was bad enough, now they'll be playing this every hour. Glad I don't listen to the radio very often.

This is not a commercial but…
For those of you with XM Satellite Radio go to channel 51; channel 51 is now the
"Mandatory Metallica" channel. They're playing new tracks mixed in with the rest of the bands complete library...plus you'll hear hard to find stuff as well. This morning they played a live Metallica version of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone" including John Popper of Blues Traveler with a nice harmonica solo.

Wha? Anyone hear the new Testament for example...now THAT'S METAL!!!

I can't keep up with the amount of awesome metal these days. Metallica has been completely insignificant in the metal world for TWO decades. They were cool from '83 to '90..SEVEN years. I've been on this forum longer than that!

They got too old fat and lazy for much too long and it bit 'em in the ass. This is like a fat, lazy Michael Phelps 30 years from now that drowned in a kiddie pool trying to show off to his grandkids.

As much as Dave Mustaine gets shit here these days..he's got to be laughing his ass off. If he's not..he should be.

I like Trivium way better than Meatallica..and that's not saying much at all!

    ..Fuggums.

I dunno... I listened to the song at least 10 times and it isn't bad at all IMO. Is it the greatest thing I've ever heard? Nope, but it is growing on me. I definitely like the heavier part better than the first half of the song. I also don't (can't) believe this is the final mix. It is clipping badly in spots and doesn't sound all that polished. Even St. Anger had a better mix, and that was supposed to sound "raw". This is probably just a teaser... Maybe it is two songs spliced together?

All in all, it is alot better than most of the stuff that passes for "metal" these days.

clearly you still LOVE metallica. that's cool. everyone is entitled to love which bands they prefer. as was said above, it appears you are still in the minority. i WANT to still like metallica, but in MY opinion, their songwriting skills have gone down the toilet.

i DO not want metallica to keep releasing MOP. i like load and reload just fine. the metallica album i listen to the the covers album they did. i really like their take on those songs.

something i continually fail to understand is WHY you make snippy, bitchy comments about other people's opinions of music, specifically metallica. i have been here a long time and haven't seen much if ANY metallica love on this board. whether or not it is because people are stuck in the 80's or because they, like me, hate the songwriting is irrelevant, because we are all entitled to think what we want.

anyway, i'll say it again, parts of it seem okay....but i still think they are TRYING too hard to be something they aren't. but what do i know?

Did it really take them 5 years to come up with that? Or did they write it and record it yesterday?

Have to reserve final judgment until all tracks are out I guess.

Still love the crap out of this song. Solo could have been better, but it's Kirk so I'm not arsed. Love the song, love the lyrics, love the direction they're taking it in. bodes very well for the future.Only thing bothering me a little is the production. Would think Greg Fidelman had more sense than having his shit mastered too loud. Some clipping, but I've only heard the low qual streams as of yet.

    And real metallica?

    Real Metallica?

They don't have to make 80s thrash for it to be good, just write good music...which it isn't.

You like it, that's great, but most of us obviously think it is shit.

If stuff like this sells then it only gives me hope. Wow. That song was pretty bad. It's like 'Look Ma! No Hands!' I read a snippet somewhere that said the producer wasn't there that much. It shows! I haven't bought a Metallica album since the Black album. Looks like that won't change if the rest of the album is anything close to this.

Definetly a cheap sounding production. Surprising since they took such pains to show how much studio time they put in with all those sneak peak videos and all. I really like the second half of the song. The first half does sound really Load-era-ish. As for James' voacls... He should have added a few more payers to beef up certain parts. The drums sound like cardboard boxes, but it's better than the steel chair of St Ass. Their guitar sound blows ever since the Black Album too. Just thin and feeble. The second half makes me give it a 6.5 / 10.

Oh, and that first clean riff? The one right at the beginning...

My favorite part was the end.
Seriously, they played this track on the radio last night along with another track off the new album. This one was definately better than the other one but it's still just not there. RIP Metal Licker

    Listening to it now....

Vocals are very Load...guitar parts are really generic...I think Metallica is trying too hard to get their old fans back, like Megadeth did with TWNAH.

Bwah?!?! No wah on the solo?

I think what would make this song better is if they kept it at the speed of the solo section the entire song. The beginning part is definitely reminiscent of Classical Gas and doesn't really fit with the end part at all.
