I like some of the recent live Metallica clips I've seen of the new and old songs. They sound pretty good.

Its like in the studio James has totally changed his vocal approach, like he wants to be the Godfather of Soul Metal or something and it sounds like he's tring too hard sometimes.

I looked into tickets to see them with Down, the money-grubbing bastards are making you buy a copy of the album to get presale tickets... a copy for each ticket. Adding $16 to the already ridiculous ticket prices. Guess I'll wait out the presale & hope there are still good seats left. I'd hate to miss Down and whoever else happens to be playing. grr

I play in a band that is well respected in my part of the globe...Written and/or been part of writing a good 50 metal tunes that we have been drawing crowds with since 99'

save your breath, Dave. The "woe is the state of metal, nothing good has been released since 1989, doomsayer" set don't want their minds changed. Nothing you say, nor any evidence you could present, will make them believe that anything but Korn and crap like that has been released "metal-wise" in the last 20 years.

          I mean, Opeth are a Krokus-like D&D band, right?

here's one for you, Billio. Bloke down my guitar shop this afternoon says to me, "dude, you GOT to hear the new Metallica cd. It'll blow your fuckin' doors off!"

To which I replied, "dude, I haven't been waiting on tenterhooks for 4 years to see what Metallica could come up with next to save all metal kind. Not a fanboy, not interested. Never really liked them back in the day anyway. Too much other good shit to listen to in the meantime."

So he thrusts a CDR into my hands and says, "honestly, you have to check this out." I was surprised at how excited he was about it - I'm used to him playing stuff like Dream Theater & Firewind in the shop. So to placate him, I take the disc & promise to check it out. Have had it on in the car all afternoon. Took Evile (ASS-kicking young thrash band that I had been greatly enjoying) out to listen to it. And have been underwhelmed by the new 'Tallica all afternoon. It is a lot better than I was expecting, but really, what is all the fuss about? Mediocre, forgettable, uninspired. Did I say mediocre? Kirk is soloing again, and it's the same old thing: repeating Pattern A, quick double-stop lick, variations on Pattern B, a couple of bendy bits. Technically he's better than many, but his soloing doesn't say ANYTHING. Give me Skolnick any day.

absolutely. By any other band, and review sites would be giving it a solid 6. Decent effort, nothing to set it apart from other bands who are doing it better.

I think you're right. If this was any other band it would totally get ignored. This album appeals to Metallica fans more than metal fans, I think

Death Magnetic is an interesting album.
20 years after the release of ...And Justice For All (my least favorite Metallica album) they return to that era Metallica.
The productional approach is very similar to Justice. The album sounds like... Gun-Metal Gray (thanks Marty Friedman), dark factories, cold, harsh, war, in your face, raw etc. the first three tunes hit you like they are shot out of a machine gun... but some of the melodic passages give you the idea that maybe there is some "light". The first third of the album is definetly the strongest. The "Justice" part of the album.
The second third of the album is the weakest. These next 4 songs show that there is some "light". The tunes are moody but they don't strike well. There's some good moments but they aren't crafted well enough and lack the dynamics to make a deep impact.
The final third returns to the darker side but it isn't as dark as the first third. The tunes are ok but not as strong as the first three.
The album isn't consistent... the strong start fades away quickly and doesn't manage to really get back on track.

This album doesn't really sound like Metallica I know... because it sounds like Metallica (does that make sense?)... It sounds too obviously Metallica.... Metallica used to be a suprise... everything they did sounded so different. This is the first time they re-visited some of their older albums. This is kinda dissapointing for me personally although this is what most of the tie hard metal/metallica fans hoped for.

To me, Metallica has never been just a metal band... they were something much bigger and interesting. You never knew what they will do next. They were real artists.
A real artist does what ever the hell he/she wants. No matter how much all the whiney metal fans bitched how much Metallica sucks... Metallica didn't give a shit... they did what they wanted.
If you make something that the others want... then you are not so much of an artist anymore... you are more like a salesman.
This is what this album sounds to me. An attempt to satisfy fans. Fans are very important but creativity is even more. Metallica didn't care if they are true metal or not. Being "true metal" doesn't mean you are a great artist/musician. Being "true" is being in a box.

Metal music is very very safe these days. The majority of Metal fans have certain expectations about music just like the people who are listening to mainstream radio and watch MTV. They want a certain product... a product which sounds familiar to what they know/like. Therefore metal is standardized. There's this certain type of sound, production (non-existent in 99% of the cases) and other elements that which everyone expects. That's why you don't hear Metal's "Dark Side Of The Moon" these days. Pretty much everyone is following a certain type of standard even if they don't acknowledge it.

It took A LOT of balls to make an album like St. Anger. The band went against the record label, the industry, the fans, even their friends to make an album like that. They were being Metallica... which is not following any standards. They took a totally different productional approach... yes that is a real production wether you like it or not... and did something very radical. They didn't play safe and that's why I liked it.
I'd like to see anyone else do something like that. Going against the expectations of the people and standards of the industry.

This is the least creative album by Metallica. But it still sounds different than most of the heavy metal today. The sound is different, the vibe is different. There's a plenty of kick ass riffs. Those riffs are medicore at Metallica's level but still a lot better than most of the stuff you hear in today's heavy music. They have this "classic, kick ass" feel to them.
Another good thing is that this album sounds alive. Another thing which doesn't follow metal's standards. It has a real human-like feel.
No friggin metronome used. Even though Lars has timing problems and the tempo slightly changes at some places... I like it more than this robotic approach that's happening today. Led Zeppelin had such a great vibe because they used to vary the rhythm however they felt like... dragging it behind the tempo or whatnot. Something which the metronome generation doesn't do.
We all know that Lars is not John Bonham... some people say that he is not a drummer but a person who has played drums for many years. You can say that. But his drumming mistakes and whatnot doesn't really bother me that much on this album. There's something about this "alive" feel that makes me to forgive him for that.
Something which bothers me more is that James doesn't have power in his voice. It's like a pillow is blocking his singing.

Something which always amuses me is when people diss. St. Anger because Kirk didn't play any solos there. You care about that when you don't like his playing anyway? Fucking ridiculous. I for one welcomed that approach. And I wished that Death Magentic doesn't have any solos.
Now I think the opposite. I think Kirk's solos fit here very well. Of course they are not good at all but....
There's a lot of tongue-in-cheek humor in Death Magnetic. A lot of it comes from Kirk. It's this kind of "hey you wanted to hear some old-school metallica shit.. ok... but I also shove all my cliche solos exaggarated down to your throat too" approach.
I found many humorous moments from this album.

But Rick Rubin and Metallica failed to make an album which will be remembered forever.
In 1986, two very important things happened in metal. Master Of Puppets and Reign In Blood (I don't like Slayer at all btw.). MOP is remembered because of it's well crafted tunes... but its production is now dated, no one follows it.
Reign In Blood set the new standards in metal production... thanks to Rick Rubin. That is the album which is still followed... and most people wont even realise it.
There were hopes that when the greatest metal writers after Black Sabbath team up with the man who created today's metal production standard something magical might happen.
              It didn't.
And not only that... the songs aren't really memoriable.
There's no hooks... for the first time in Metallica's career. Yes even St. Anger had hooks.
The choruses sound just like other verses.
It's dissapointing. Specially when Rick Rubin is known for forcing the band to write hooks. Back in the day when he started with all kinds of hip-hop artists, he didn't want just rapping, he wanted that the music has hooks... putting the Beatles element to rap music.
Because of that I think this is now my least favorite Metallica album.
Another thing is that all the other Metallica albums grow on you when you listen to them more and more... I don't think this one has that effect.
This album will do well for now. But I predict that in 30 years St. Anger will be a cult album and Death Magnetic will be forgotten.
But it still beats the hell out of watching the pictures of that bitch Palin.

I've only heard 5 of the songs from the album and I like them. I don't think what I heard was actually unforgiven III though so I'm not going to count that one.

I think I realized *WHY* I like what I have heard - I want to hear this played live. It attracks me to see them perform. Load and Reload never did.

I still don't like the production of any of it. If that's Kirks signature amp head he's playing through then I really don't want to own anything by whatever company built it. the guitars sound flat to me..

For the songs I am digging them, I don't think they hit a home run, but they certainly knocked the shit out of the ball. I am really liking All Nightmare Long.

Anyway my only real point is what I have heard is going to make me buy the album. I don't think it's as good as the new Testament, but I grew up in the area so I'm biased when it comes to Testament. But it's kind of nice listening to a heavy album where I can understand what the hell the singer is singing.
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil
