So does anyone agree that the Opeth is a upgraded version of the Early 80's Krokus D&D image...

I take it I am alone on this one.

Think of Opeth as "updated" Krokus. I mean watch the one D&D themed Krokus video then watch some of Opeth's videos...

He should donate his chest hair to the Hard Rock.

Screaming in the Night was a stellar song.

                      • Well, I bought the album and have listened to it. I have read some of the comments here and find them amusing as all hell. This proves that you cant make everyone happy. I will also say that I am a die-hard, saw them live a crap load of times in the 80s, can play most songs Black album and before, had a white explorer and jackson RR just cuz they did, bought b-sides, picture disks, met them and have autographs, still crank certain songs in the car if they come on kind of fan of the early stuff. I will keep it simple.

For the first time in nearly 20 fukin years, Metallica has actually made a Metallic album.

This was the album that they should have made after Justice. It has the necessay complexity and length without going progressive, it has some killer riffs and it is fast and heavy. Simple as that.

The Black album was cool for what it was - and "ground breaking" because it got them into the main stream and made them money, but it was not where they were headed based on the progression of the albums made in the 80s.

Just about every thing that came after the Black album was a joke on all of the older fans and part of Lars facination with becoming a "rock star" and Hetfield's desire to be a "singer". Please.

Garage, Inc. was cool for the second disk because alot of that stuff was on b-sides released in europe and asia and not readily accessable to the masses (i will never understand why they did shit like that, but that is another issue).

St. Anger was fucking ridiculas. They sounded like crap (I mean, their "un-produced" for-fun b-sides sounded better). They were actually trying to be nu-metal or something. That could never work because 1) they arent and 2) everyone knows it.

I will not even mention the other crap.

Death Magnetic actually has a few tracks which I had to restart just to listen to the begining again because they were so fucking cool. Of all the music I listen too, I only do that with songs on Master and Justice, just to turn it up loud to enjoy it from the begining because the volume may have been low when the song started.

Is every song perfect, no - of course not. But neither was every song on Justice, but when it was good, it was fukin killer. Master speaks for itself and is standard by which all other thrash metal is (or should be) judged (and yes, I am a slayer fan too and Reign is killer and a standard in its own right, but Master it is not).

My take on this new album is that after the public breakdown that was that stupid movie. And after they got their shit together and came out of the haze, they actually started paying attention to what people were saying about them, particulary die-hard fans.

Is Death Magnetic the album they wanted to make. I say hell no, they have shown where their allegences lie in so many crystal clear ways (look, whatever I was back then, I follow money now too, so while I might not agree, I certainly understand why they did what they did).

I think this album is actually about saying to the world, and particularly old fans: hey fuck everything, we can still put out a Metallica album if we want to.

                        Fuk yeah!

                        • Oh and all the people who seem to think that there are all these new bands doing all this wild and completely earth shattering stuff with metal, dust off the following albums: Master, Justice, Reign, The New Order, Among the Living, Alters of Madness, Rust in Peace, Beneath the Remains, Soul of a New Machine and Deicide. Sorry guys, its been done, and done better of the most part the first time. Its one of the reasons that metal went underground. You can only get so fast, so heavy and the vocals so growly before it becomes difficult to listen too. Everything else is just a slight variation on an old theme. Sigh.

                            You forgot Awakening the World...

Edit: Actually, I'm kinda serious. Lost Horizon really doesn't resemble any other band that I can think of, especially Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax etc. How many of them hit soprano D's using only head voice?

I'm not one to say that anyone is doing anything ground-breaking out there right now. Mainly because I know what I know, but I'm sure even though I might think someone is doing something pretty original, it probably has been borrowed from somewhere else that I'm just not familiar with. Case in point - I'm a big Lamb Of God fan. Apparently they're just rehashing old Slayer/Pantera licks that have been done a thousand times before and shouldn't be worth my time. I've never really listened to Slayer or Pantera so have no point of reference. Ultimately, what does it matter if I enjoy what they do?

I will argue with those that would assert that nothing good has been released since the albums you mentioned came out.

                              • Hey I have a question for anyone else who bought the album. I just noticed there is no Parental Advisory sticker on the album.. anyone else have it with? I'm wondering if I bought a kid friend version of the cd or if metallica is really viewed as that non-threatening now
In the future though I need to remember to not buy guitars while on Nyquil
