I downloaded the cd from itunes - is it mixed the same way as the CD version or the Guitar Hero version? I'd feel a little less metal if I had the badly mixed version...

Having said that, Lars IS a douche. The drumming on the album is fine. He had nothing to do with it. Metallica still has it's issues, yes. But they will never be 22 years old again, no matter how much you guys want it.
I think the new album is their best since AJFA honestly. I honestly think it should have been released in 1991.
I think that 90% of metalheads were ready to hate this album before they ever knew it was going to come out. They could have released Sgt Pepper and everyone would hate it.
As for the compression and production, EVERY BAND these days is squished as fuck. You can't blame Metallica for that trend in music. Did they write the album? Probably not. Did they play everything on it? Hell no. Is it good? Yes.
If you are feeling unmetal after listening to it just put on some Deathspell Omega afterwards and return to your metalness.

I relaize everyone uses compression but thats no excuse to go so over the top that it starts to clip regularly. I liked the songs and just about everything but when I hear clipping all over the place I have a hard time going back.GTWGITS! - RacerX

get the FLAC versions of the guitar hero 3 mixes if you can, fantastic as FLAC is uncompressed so you dont lose any audio data like you do with mp3/ogg/wma etcMy music:

And they didn't write the songs? So they get the credit and the royalties, but someone else did it for them?
