        attitudes are different in music...
metal never had so much pure alpha male attitude as rock/hard rock which is all about being very macho, tons of swagger, party every day, getting tons of pussy... bands like The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Guns 'n Roses etc. having tons of attitude never meant having the heaviest music... it meant having tons of balls in the music.
old school Funk musicians had tons of attitude, cool as hell, but they didn't play death metal, they did funk with balls.

metal was more outcast... it wasn't as rebellious as Punk... Punk was fuck everything, punk crowd was very extravagant, they let the whole world know who they are with their outrageous antics.

metal was a lot more introverted, metal wasn't so much against "THE MAN" like punk.. it was just a lot more anti-social... metal folks were a lot more laid back than the rock or punk crowd, instead they put all their energy and anger into the music.

when you see some interviews, you'll see Steven Tyler trying to stick his tongue into some chick's ear, Johnny Rotten tells everyone to fuck off but the metal man is more quieter, often uncomfortable in that situation, just waiting to grab his instrument and then let everyone know what he thinks.

so you see, rock and punk are a lot more about the attitude, metal is more dependent of the musical statement.

that doesn't make any sense... if you take classic bands such as Deep Purple (hard rock) and Judas Priest (heavy metal) then DP has 10 times more complicated guitar and drum parts.

Metal is about the vibe, aura or something like that.
When you listen to hard rock bands like Led Zeppelin or Blue Cheer, their most "metallic" sounding tunes such as "Communication Breakdown" or "Summertime Blues" still sound like rock'n'roll and not metal because they have this cool, swinging feel and cheerful vibe.
What Black Sabbath did, was playing the same kind of blues rock oriented riffs but with totally different feel... it wasn't about coolness anymore. When Black Sabbath played their riffs, they sounded dark and that's how metal was born. The dark, somewhat mystical, deep vibe/aura/feel.
That's what is separating metal from other rock music styles. That's exactly like you separate Vivaldi from Wagner.

okay, so after looking at most of the videos, i think i got it summed up...

Trend... punk influence and trying to play a solo... unsuccessfully...
Metal... at least 50% of the band with hair down half way to their ass and being able to play your instruments...

though i do feel kind of lame for listening to more trend bands lately than i used too...

                            Hey E:

Deep Purple may have more complicated guitar parts, but Judas Priest had that and the attitude, at least from the 80s onwards. Deep Purple was always more classic rock than heavy metal. Same with Zep.

I consider early Sabbath to be classic rock. Dark sure, but still classic rock. At least for the first 4-5 albums.

Metal in my mind didn't really come about until Maiden.

Sabbath, Priest = Vivaldi; Maiden, Metallica = Wagner.

Metal started with Black Sabbath..dropped tuning, theme , huge evil riffs..upsidedown crosses..solos-a-plenty..cool tone..it had it all.

Priest added another guitar and an incredible singer..but Al Atkins was their first singer and he was lame.

DP was a huge influence as well..as the heavy zep...and..eh..

This stuff is elementary..I gotta BAD toothache !!!

                              Have fun man!!

you are confusing me... what kind of attitude you are talking about? Deep Purple had way more attitude than JP when we talk about being "macho-cool-rockstar playing 36 Marshall stacks cranked to 11 with balls and chicks are in line waiting to suck their cocks" kind of thing.

As I've mentioned before yes indeed, DP is hard rock, so is Zep etc. where attitude is more evident than in metal, but not Black Sabbath as they sound totally different. If Symptom of The Universe isn't Metal then nothing else is. That is the ultimate metal tune.
Black Sabbath always had more characteristic qualities of metal than Iron Maiden. Iron Maiden was influental with their fast galloping tempos and twin attack guitars but Sabbath influenced a lot more sub-genres of metal with their more dynamic and darker approach.
