Metal or Trend? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QaS59zq7jU
Its too bad there isn't a ladder schematic with each sub genre performing a certain task. we could energize it and see if it worked or smoked.

Phillup, that's so damn true right there! "See if it works or smokes" Wouldn't that be cool to have?
For the most part I try to continue to either call it metal or non metal. The term metal is too broad anymore and the name metal is almost a whore in some respects.
Ever hear the term 'Classic Metal'? I guess that's what they call the metal from the late 70' (nwobhm) and early to mid 80's.
Cool with me man, I'll go with that! It differentiates and makes a statement leaving no confusion.'Howling in shadows

He finds his heaven
Spewing from the mouth of hell'

In 2000 Rob Halford stated that "Soilwork was the future of metal"..The metal god was 100% right! Soilwork was one of THE main player in the NWOSDT movement (New wave of swedish death thrash)..they were formed at the time At The Gates released the metal landmark "Slaughter of the soul"..they took that formula and ran with it, like many swedish bands did and gothenburg was a household word amoung metaheads. My introduction to Soilwork was in early 2000 when "Chainheart machine" was released. To me, they refined what "Slaughter of the soul" was about. It inspired me to seek and buy every swedish melodic death thrash I got my hands on..too many to list. They were my favorite Swedethrash band due to Peter Wichers playing and songcraft, and singer Bjorn "Speed" strid"..it was different and fresh. At this time Arch Enemy released their second wih ex singer Johan Liva. I definitely prefered SW to AE in ever possible way. The songs were more aggressive, I definitely prefered Strid's voice over the VERY monotone Liva, and the solos were just as melodic as anything the Amotts have done and better IMO. Bjorn actually wanted to "sing" and took lessons and became a real powerhouse. This added more dynamics to their sound and made them more accessible overall. This was still when Korn, Creed, Kid Rock, Disturbed, ruled and metal was still non exist in the mainsteam. In 2003 something funny happened, metal started to surface and after 10 years or so, real metal bands where playing Ozzfest...including SW. With their growing popularity Strid utlized his clean poweful voice even more. But did not make the fatal mistake that In Flames did with "The soundtrack to your escape" where Anders does his Johnathan Davis impression..which flopped. IF quickly learned by that fuck up, and went back being who they are, but didn't bounce back completely. That move hurt them. The most commercial SW cd is "Stabbing the drama" my least favorite cd as well as many long time SW fans. They didn't want to make the same mistake their buds in IF did and not compromise the integrity of their metal blood. They redeemed themselves with "Sworn to the great divide" which is a great release IMO!! It is everything new metal should be. Unfortunately many US bands took that formula and watered it down and made it completly fuggin' gay..hmmm imagine that! Such bands with early releases by As I lay dying, Killswitch Engage, Avenge Sevenfold and ect owe everything to Soilwork, and they openly admit it. They wouldn't exist without them..right down to their Comparison guitars. Years later bands like KSE has improved since metal is "safe" again and dropped some of the gayness with their monotone, tone deaf crooning bullshit choruses..a formula that's been beat to death by countless "core" bands that can NOT sing their way out of a paper bag. Now if anyone was new to Soilwork I could see how they could get lost in the overflow of the scene they single handidly created. If you compare Soilwork to the the many examples of trends I've have posted the difference is blatantly obvious. Soilwork has not succumb to trends to the point of selling out and do NOT care to be one of a billion bands that sound like flaming gay At The Gates with a down syndrome...with Beatle haircuts.
Ie. In 2002 I wanted to bring Gothenburg to Cleveland with my band Bed Of Nails. There was no scene at the time and still isn't to this day. What I intended to do was cutting edge locally and unpopular in the days of Nu/Rap "metal". I used the word "metal" in quotation because that is what the mainstream dictated it was...and we all know if the mainsteam says so..it must be so! I would have NEVER guessed what I loved so much in the underground 10 years ago would be so popular today. But, like anything POPULAR..it gets beat to death and dummied down to the point of cooki-cutter nauseum. Even staying to my true metal roots would just get lost in the shuffle..so, why fuggin' bother.
Even tho I am actually starting a project with a friend of mine that IS truly influenced by the gothenburg sound. I couldn't refuse the offer to record with Curran Murphy (nevermore/annihilator) produced by Neil Kernon..but that's another thread.
I'll get back to the metal..but I had to clarify this honest misnomer.

true metal, trend metal... meh... I like something in between... I like sleazy metal.
Lately I've been listening to Hardcore Superstar... they are from Sweden and they get into fights they call their music Street Metal and it's a fusion 80's hair metal, glam and sleaze rock, punk and thrash metal.
Just look at their video... it's so bad and cheesy that it's actually good

With metal like this I can see why people can't tell the difference between quality metal and core trends. As a muscian honing my tone, skills, and writing for 30+ years.. I can't find one redeeming musical value with bands like this..
AGAIN, I intend to expose metal accessabile to the average member here, not just to indulge in my selfish personal taste.
Thank you,

Bill, what sub genres are under the umbrella of true metal though? Maybe you are saying that the sub genre doesn't define true metal or trend? Even though you consider a band as trendy does something about a certain band get your attention and demand airplay as well?
The first time I heard soilwork I too was impressed. The quality of the recording was kick ass and it led me to listen to inFlames which was also another kick ass recording. It left me wanting more action though. If I were to compare flag football to football, I would have to say that SW & IF would be flag football. As good as it is I wanted to see someone eat some turf!
A JCF member posted this one time -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJkMrl4AG8w Not only does this band make you eat turf, but they will also tear the goal post down and shove it up your ass. Ralph Santolla's solo is a god send to catch your breath! This band is almost over the edge for me.
There is one band that I would like to bring up. Wikipedia is not a reliable source but over 2 decades of kicking ass is. That would make these guys "True" and far from trendy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obituary_(band)
with all do respect.

Originally posted by Endrik View Postno, it's modern hardcore (very bad I might say) mixed with metal elements.... if a fusion of hardcore and metal should be metal... then you get thrash metal...Soilwork is a Swedish melodic death metal band from Helsingborg... Due to their more recent changes in sound, they have been likened to their label mates In Flames, labeled metalcore in some instances and even faced scrutiny by fans for their progressive sound.

I don't think anyone takes seriously what wikipedia or some fans say or how they categorize something.
That being said I don't care what anyone says about soilwork... I could never listen to them... very depressing... they made me feel really bad inside, physically... specially the song As We Speak... I dunno how, it has a very weird effect on me... I have to listen to a lot of hippy shit to get that feeling out of me... just by checking that link it reminded me what that tune did to me.... now I'm floating on psychedelic noises... some Hendrix and trippy era Beatles seem to do the trick"There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

I love wikipedia - I just found out there's something called "groove metal." I had no idea.
I guess I like it because I have most of the CD's they mention.
Now - is groove metal metal or should I stop listening to Pantera?-------------------------
