We're gonna fuck around and get off topic, but if I list a doubleneck Gibson and tell you to PM me for a price, how fucking stupid would I look if I quote you one price and John another? Do you think for a moment that people don't discuss sales on these forums? I'm sorry, but my reputation is too good to screw up over a goddamned guitar.
The only reason NOT to post prices publicly (for non-dealers) is if you want to give people different prices or if you want to take bids.
Otherwise you're just wasting your time and that of everyone interested by screwing with PM's.
re: the topic
John - Why talk in code like this? Just spit out who you think should be considered a dealer and why - there isn't much to discuss without any concrete details.
Well as one of the GC employees on the forum. And probbly the most outspoken that i work there. I can say I have NEVER sold anything or tried to sell anything on the JCF. I have mentioned a few guitars from time to time. But in no way did i ever attempt a sale. Just providing info on a topic.
Devils advocate here. The guy who may be a hobbiest and tinkerer of guitars who frequents guitar shows. Buys various parts for guitars or even motorcycles as stated above. He gets a few too many parts or decieds to take things in a differant direction. He then is all of a sudden a dealer? Am i reading that right? If tht's the case that is silly to think so. Take a guy who has almost unlimited cash. Someone who loves guitars and buys a bunch of gear including amps pedals etc... for his own enjoyment. He decides to let loose some of his collection offering the fine folk here first dibs on some of the gear we have seen in posts. Some show an interest in it. Some of the gear moves some doesnt. How can this ocassional sale of gear make the member a dealer?
Sure it is possable tha anybody with money can amass a large collection. the want to sell it. That doesnt make him a dealer. Having access to getting unlimited amounts of gear and turning it over on a reglar basis is closer to being a dealer than just a hobbiest with an extremely large collection who may dump some gear periodically. Same goes for the guy with all those motor cycle parts. Whos to say hes not a bike mechanic with a passion for bikes. Who has a collection of bikes and parts for things. Like restoration projects or repairs. Sure im not saying it isnt possible. But perspective is more of an issue i think. I know several people with over 100 guitars. someof them form here. Others i just now. Now if the sell off some of thier guitars. That doesnt make them a dealer. It just makes them someone who's seling some guitars from a collection. Like an estate sale. JMHO.

Are you asking so much money that you are ashamed to say what your asking?
This statement pisses me off to no end. Not so much that you said it, hell, I don't even know you. But some of us are "old school" and we don't feel it's necessary to divulge our financial/buying decisions. I can open my local newspaper seven days a week and see bazillions of ads where people are selling houses, cars, bongs, whateverthefuck, and at the bottom of the ad it states "call for a price." I can promise you, it doesn't make me want to call up John and ask him how much he paid for the 75 gallon aquarium. He might tell me it's none of my fucking business!
With the Internet, the general public has incredible access to all kinds of information. If I post an ad for a 1982 Gibson Doubleneck, you can bet your ass someone is gonna hop on eGay and find out how much they are going for. And, I'm not ashamed of asking what I think I can get for an instrument. If you call and my price is too high, well, I'm sorry. Look elsewhere!
Again, this is not necessarily directed at you, but at the general statement.
well if you know the price of a certain guitar, you get it, and you're happy with the guitar you get then what does it matter? or is this about those who just post guitars without prices? if its anything like selling cars then i would assume that if one sells a certain number of guitars a year that would constitute them as a dealer. hmmm if a person sells a couple grams of weed a month are they a dealer or are they just helpin a few people out.......aaarrrrggghhh now i just confused myself. someone hurry up and figure it out before i make another stupid post....
Oh and by "starting a bidding war" I mean you could say "well so and so offered me $1000.00 can you beat that?"
Pretty soon it's fucking Ebay
Well, when the new classified section was started, there was an option for bidding like ebay. Somebody did sell a guitar there to a forum member that way, at a pretty cheap price, too. I don't know what happened to that option.
And as far as putting a price in ads, I'm not sure any longer if it applies since the platinum thing has started. I inquired about this with Jeremy, but he seems to be away on business or something and haven't heard back. I also think it would be better just to put a price so people aren't fishing for offers, but we all know people makes offers behind the scenes anyway.
I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
All kidding aside, I've had wonderful dealings with several members here at the JCF. The rules stated to list a price and I have done so. If the rules have changed, I/We need to know.

There don't appear to be any new rules since the new classified section took place. I agree they should be updated.
