IIRC, Matt from Matt's Music (or was it Matt from OSG?) listed one of his personal guitars in the Classifieds some years ago. The guitar was also stated as being personally owned/played (a regular player or live backup, IIRC).
Now, if you start out as a player and that leads to becoming a dealer, and you sell a guitar that you ordered for yourself through your own store, then sell it here as being personally owned (even if it was not purchased to be played, like the LTDs for example), are you an individual selling a guitar or a business selling a product?
I have no problem with selling as an individual. Heck, I have no problem with selling as a business, whether it's stated up front or not.
I see nothing wrong with making a profit on a sale, whether business or individual (except for MF - the sooner the giants fall, the better ) but I wouldn't want to see another classifieds listing like OSG's first post :ROTF:
As for Jani's recent "make offer" listing, all of those did have prices in their previous listings. They each ran over $1000, and I'm sure he wasn't too interested in taking it up the ass on any of them. I know I wouldn't be.
Unfortunately, too many people are looking for something they can sell for a profit a short time after buying it, rather than waiting for the actual demand for those items to dictate a price increase. They'd rather buy it cheap now and sell it in a month for a profit than buy it for what it is and break even in the same length of time.
If you're looking for $100 off the $1500 asking price, that let's me know you're looking to sell it quickly so you can claim a profit rather than buying the guitar for its own merit. If you're looking for $1000 off the same guitar, you need to get a real jobLast edited by Newc; 09-26-2008, 09:19 PM.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

But some of us are "old school" and we don't feel it's necessary to divulge our financial/buying decisions. I can open my local newspaper seven days a week and see bazillions of ads where people are selling houses, cars, bongs, whateverthefuck, and at the bottom of the ad it states "call for a price." I can promise you, it doesn't make me want to call up John and ask him how much he paid for the 75 gallon aquarium. He might tell me it's none of my fucking business!
With the Internet, the general public has incredible access to all kinds of information. If I post an ad for a 1982 Gibson Doubleneck, you can bet your ass someone is gonna hop on eGay and find out how much they are going for. And, I'm not ashamed of asking what I think I can get for an instrument. If you call and my price is too high, well, I'm sorry. Look elsewhere!
Again, this is not necessarily directed at you, but at the general statement.
I think you misunderstand me... Or maybe I misunderstand you.
I'm not talking about how much the seller gave for the item. Hell it could have been a gift, he could have won it in a raffle. It doesn't change the value of the guitar.
What I meant was, I have solid color 5 year old SL1 with some with some normal wear and tear, a few scratches, some belt rash etc. It's worth maybe $800.00 tops
I could not list it on the Classified section and ask 1600.00 without getting blasted, and rightfully so.
There is no good reason I can think of not to list the asking price.

Back to guitars for sale on the JCF... I really don't care where the guitars come from as long as they are not stolen, bogus copies or peices of shite. I would hope that who ever sells these kick ass guitars would be a legit person that isnt here to take the money and run. I would feel safer buying a guitar from here than I would on craigslist or ebay.
Now I'm tired of the crap at guitar center and craigslist Lets see Some Good shit Ooohh Yeah!!

Am i reading that right? If tht's the case that is silly to think so. Take a guy who has almost unlimited cash. Someone who loves guitars and buys a bunch of gear including amps pedals etc... for his own enjoyment. He decides to let loose some of his collection offering the fine folk here first dibs on some of the gear we have seen in posts. Some show an interest in it. Some of the gear moves some doesnt. How can this ocassional sale of gear make the member a dealer?
Sure it is possable tha anybody with money can amass a large collection. the want to sell it. That doesnt make him a dealer. Having access to getting unlimited amounts of gear and turning it over on a reglar basis is closer to being a dealer than just a hobbiest with an extremely large collection who may dump some gear periodically. Same goes for the guy with all those motor cycle parts. Whos to say hes not a bike mechanic with a passion for bikes. Who has a collection of bikes and parts for things. Like restoration projects or repairs. Sure im not saying it isnt possible. But perspective is more of an issue i think. I know several people with over 100 guitars. someof them form here. Others i just now. Now if the sell off some of thier guitars. That doesnt make them a dealer. It just makes them someone who's seling some guitars from a collection. Like an estate sale. JMHO.

I'm not talking about JCFr's selling or trading various parts or tinkering or frequenting guitar shows. I am talking about employees of music stores or pawn shops or independant guitar dealers posing as normal musicians just trying to sell some of their gear. They usually claim "gas".
You can't tell me that somebody that has posted well over 50 guitars in 1 year for sale or trade is a tinkerer or a frequenter of guitar shows.
Look at my post count. Heck... it says I have no life.
I know which ones of us are the real genuine article musicians and the ones who are just businessmen (or collectors) who only frequent the JCF to sell or trade their gear. The only reason these members even contribute to other parts of this forum (very rarely I might) is to eventually point to their section in the classifieds.
Back in the old classifieds, everybody could participate. It was mostly good but it created much work for the admins because of the occasional blow ups. Thats the real reason it was changed. I agree.. the change was a good thing. Back in those days.. if you were a seller, a great way to "prelist" and eventually sell a piece of gear was to:
1. talk it up big time in the gear section and tell everybody it was your #1 or a keeper or it will be with you until you die.
2. post a clip of you playing that piece of gear.
3. have your JCF brothers talk it up like its the best thing since sliced bread.
4. have second thoughts about keeping it because of financial or other issues.
5. list it in the classifieds
DONE> SOLD.
With the open dialog of the old classifieds many times it exposed you if you were a dealer or a non-playing businessman.
With the newer classifieds its a pay to play section. IMHO.. there are several dealers who are playing hard.

My boss wouldn't let me sell electronics privately even though I love tinkering around with electronics. I am an electronics salesrep by trade. Matt is a guitar salesrep by trade. The only way he could be a private seller is if he ceased to operate Matts Guitars.

I would call him a dealer if he had gear to sell or trade every week and a ton of gear to sell or trade every month.
