  • A Dealer??

What constitutes a guitar dealer on the JCF??

Back in the day.. on the JCF there were known private dealers posing as collectors or enthusiasts.
They were one by one exposed and weeded out by the admins.

Obviously.. somebody selling a few guitars and some gear most likely isn't a dealer but what about the guy selling 25+ guitars at one time?

What about the guy who has a never ending supply of amps and cabs to sell or trade?

I know first hand a bunch of JCF'rs who are employees at Guitar Center or other music stores who have a nice side business selling or trading on the JCF. I have no problem with that but what gets me is that they pose as players with gas or collectors or mega enthusiasts when actually they are sales guys.

Its urked me for a while on the JCF. What do you think?

At what point does a dealer become a hobbyist though? A dealer here, who is a cool guy with a lot of good stories and experience sells guitars as a dealer, but I think if he doesn't sell them, it's not a huge loss because he just enjoys the instrument. Likewise, I think you could look at Fuller's Guitar Graveyard in a similar way

Thats what I mean.. its not the fact that they might be dealers that urks me.. its the fact that the little JCF'rs think that they are dealing with a private sale or trade when in actuallity they are buying from a store.
Think of it this way.. I have bought many items from Chris Guitars online. He has a nice business and nice guitars. Is it ok for him to sell on the JCF as just Chris.. a guy with a huge case of gas? Isn't it deceiptful to pose as a private sale when you are actually a business? I have been around the music business for most of my life and I can tell you with 100% certainty that most players that have 100 guitars to sell or trade in 1 year are not players.. they are businessmen.

Wow! This is a very interesting topic. I wanna see how it turns out. I seldom buy things online so this doesn't really affect me but I truly do think it is a good topic to discuss.

Its very commonly done on the motorcycle forums that have classifieds sections. I would venture a guess and say that 75% of the guys listing parts are salvage yards or motorcycle shops yet they pose themselves as just bikers. Same thing with the chicks that post their pics on those sites. They pretend they are just normal biker girls but when you dive deeper you realize they are promoting some kind of porn website.

Speaking of selling in The Classifieds, I still haven't seen a clarification on posting SALE PRICES on items. Prior to Platinum Membership, I was specifically told that a price had to be included with the sale. To date, I have seen no written changes to indicate things are different for Platinum Membership. Recently, there have been two sellers that listed equipment with no price attached to the sale.

Frankly, I would prefer to NOT list my prices because in all fairness, it's a private deal between me and the buyer. However, if the rules state that we must list a price, I'll play ball. But I think it's only fair that everyone has to play by the same rules.

                  Go get em Mark.

You know what would be a really interesting contest????
Somebody with a TON of time on their hands should go back through the classifieds and post a list of the JCF'rs who have listed the most gear for sale or trade. Sort of like the post count!!

I'd be pissed if I bought a guitar from an "individual" and found out they were a salesman for a business. It's just misleading and decietful (sp?). Now, if I wanted the guitar, I'd still buy it from a business, I would just want to know it up front is all.

Well, most forums specifically forbid business owners from doing business on the classifieds unless you support the forum. There are sponsors that pay for the privilege to present themselves as dealers. A dealer should be able to move an item or two from their personal collection I think, but running a business here should require supporting the site with a sponsorship.

I guess the platinum thing sort of muddied the waters on this I think.

I think that you should definately have to list prices. Otherwise, shit goes to the highest bidder. It may as well be Ebay.

Are you asking so much money that you are ashamed to say what your asking?

Shit I would sell my SL2H for the right money. Who wants to start the bids. PM me please. Then, when I figure out what you are willing to give, I will decide if I am willing to sell.

                        That is lame.

We're gonna fuck around and get off topic, but if I list a doubleneck Gibson and tell you to PM me for a price, how fucking stupid would I look if I quote you one price and John another? Do you think for a moment that people don't discuss sales on these forums? I'm sorry, but my reputation is too good to screw up over a goddamned guitar.

Hey, not listing a price just limits the people that would normally buy.

When someone won't list a price, I assume it's MSRP and forget about contacting them.

It's been true too many times.

Every once in a while there are things that can only had by an individual that won't list a price. I usually do without, but sometimes get curious or have to have it - but that is exceedingly rare.

I am not saying that you would quote different prices to different people. What I am saying is that people may put feelers out there just to see what their shit is worth. It wastes everyones time.

Why the hell don't you just say what you want for it? It's honest, It's up front and it saves headaches.

That way, I know right up front what you want and if I can afford it.
