  • My neighbors now have a legit reason to hate me!

Much to my neighbor's dismay I cleaned out the garage today and set up and mic'ed my drumset. Now I can track drums in my garage! I can already track guitars and bass in my bedroom, so now I can do entire demos in my home. Or albums if you are into black metal.

For all you tech nerds out there, I am using 4 mics on the drums. A pair of SM57's as overheads(these thrings really DO turn up everywhere), an SM56 on the snare and a e609 on the kick. As you can surely see, I am used to mic'ing guitars. These four run into a API 4 channel mic pre, then into an Alesis 16 channel mixer getting mixed down to one channel on my tape machine. I also have a dbx compressor and an Alesis reverb unit.

Sound proof it with egg crate padding. Its cheap. It looks nice and it works.

I heard that (from sound engineers) the egg crate thing was just a myth and it didn't work.

Saving money by not needing a reverb unit?

cool!! i ended up going with triggers for the drums and live cymbals mic'd with a pair of MXL condenser vocal mic's in my home studio. the neighbors REALLY hate that because ALL they hear are cymbals!! hahahaha!!

that's pretty awesome though. it's fun once you are able to do everything in your home studio!!
              GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

              and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

I have a bunch of soundproofing material here in my bedroom(two Roominater[?] kits). I think I'm going to be getting another lock-out jam room or moving into a warehouse soon, so I am not going to put too much effort into the garage right now.

it doesn't... well maybe a little... but no way it makes the low "boom boom" sounds from the drums (specially from the kick drum) go away.
Real sound proofing requires building massive, isolated walls with air inside them. Of course then you need to build a good ventilation system too, because otherwise you can't breathe.
