In the northeastern United States, if you don't have Livin' on a Prayer available & on tap at all times for when the crowd is running out of gas, you are ignoring a potent weapon indeed. Chicks love that shit, and guys love screaming "WHOAAAAAAAA!!! WE'RE HALFWAY THERE!" with chicks that love that shit.

You can't understimate the strength of power-pop on the 20's-30's crowd.

How about "Kiss me I'm shitfaced" by the Dropkick Murphys? Granted you'll never get it to sound right without the bagpipes, but if you do.....no better song to get the crowd up and going LOL!!!
I live on the edge of danger facing life and death every single day.....then I leave her at home and go disarm bombs.

We find that these also go over particularly well:

Wanted Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi
            Superstition - Stevie Wonder
You Really Got Me - VH
No Secrets - The Angels (or Angel City as I believe they were known in the US)
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
500 Miles - The Proclaimers (replete with Scottish accents - simple song that gets the room pogo-ing)
            Hail yesterday

We've had a TON of requests for Pat Travers, Snortin' Whiskey, so I'm in the process of learning that one to add to our set list. Pat Travers fuggin ROCKS anyway!

Most peeps, especially chicks, will get up and dance to songs they know. That's probably why ACDC gets 'em up on the dance floor. Most peeps know their tunes.

Any good rock tunes will do. Can't go wrong with classics from Aerosmith, Bad Company, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, George Thorogood, ZZ Top etc.

Basically anything that has a consistent rhythm. Don't bother with epic progressive stuff like 2112 or XYZ. Sure they'd be fun to play and might impress the music lovers in the audience, but for the dancer/party peeps, They could give a rats ass.

Simplicity sells, unfortunately, but if you want to keep the bar owners happy, then ya' gotta play the tunes to get their patrons on the dance floor and to drink lots!

Sorry... the 2112 suggestion was a joke.
"We were sitting on the bus one day and there were 5 of us hanging out. There was only one beer left in the cooler and we actually all took a little cup and split it. It was a pathetic day in a rock and roll when five grown men have to be sitting there sharing a beer. "

                          FlyingSkull.
I knew that. Just wanted to put the point across, so I used 2112 as an example of what not to play. That's all.
That's so Canadian of you to apologize!

Might I also suggest some 80's era hair metal a la, Poison, Motley Crue, and similar good time rockers.

                              "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors

"Hurry Up Harry" by Sham 69

                              "Wishing Well" by Free.

I have always sworn that I would never consider playing in a covers band like this, no, not me. Alas, I now have no hair and am getting old, I'm not going to be "the next big thing", Metallica aren't likely to ring me to join.

Not only that, I did the sound at a little festival not so long back and the bands doing the originals went down so-so, but the covers bands went down a storm. Every single old boiler and Milf got up and danced, and from the glazed looks on their faces, would have been putty in the hands of the old farts up on stage playing, they were fucking fizzing. Old trout being my favourite kind (well, it's a lot easier to catch than young totty, and grateful too), I've decided to look for a covers band. Lock up yer grannies!!
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

                              I nearly broke her back
