  • Does your size determine your favourite guitar?

I've had an Epiphone SG for years now - I wanted one cos Angus uses one! I put Seymour Duncan pickups in it and it sounds awesome. It plays great too, with a nice low action.
But I've just never really taken to it all that much. I always preffered my Epi Black Beauty.
I'm now starting to think the SG is just too small a guitar for me. It looks cool on Angus cos he's a fuckin' midget.
Lots of people find the Les Paul too heavy, but I prefer a heavy guitar, it just feels better.

I'm no giant by any means, I'm just under 6 ft tall and about 180lbs (82 kg). I also dont have massive spade hands. But the neck on the SG feels tiny compared to something like the great neck on my SL3.

I just wonder if people find that, if they're smaller themselves, they prefer smaller, lighter guitars like the SG? And if they're bigger do they prefer the LP or similarly heavy guitar?
I really want to like that SG as it was a gift from my then girlfriend (now wife) but it's just never going to do it!

I don't think it has as much to do with the players physical size as just their personal preference. I've seen little guys play the shit out of a Les Paul. Personally, I can't stand the feel of a LP or an SG for different reasons. For me, LP's are too heavy and I don't like the necks. SG's feel like plywood with strings and the look does not apeal to me. I'm the same size as you and my C/J's and PRS just fit my taste. I like my guitars like my women. Good lookin with a little meat on them........but not too much meat.

I just just had a sudden urge to sugga dick..! If I wore that guitar and didn't suck male genitalia..somethin' is very wrong! - Bill Z.

I'm not big, but I'd back away from a Big Red, a double Rhoads is just too much.

But i have LPs and SGs and don't really notice a size difference.

That said, I think you've convinced yourself that you don't like the SG. Time to sell it and move on.

Nah, if I sell it I'll be lucky to get about £80 ($150). No point selling it for that, I know I'd regret it just like I always do when I sell a guitar. Especially when this was an Xmas gift from my wife.
Nah, no point selling it. It's worth more to me even if I'm not that keen on it. It's a good wee guitar for practicing on. Maybe I'll experiment with it - stick an Invader in it or something.

I'm average size ,mainly I like the kelly body size and weight.I also have a RR1 - it feels like it's only a neck in my hand (but still a kick ass guitar !)

I also have SG - it's a fun guitar but , I agree it's very light (amazingly good sustain though)

Jimmy Page was a little man but no one else has made Les Paul look so cool

I'm 6feet0 and skinny... about 150lbs... small hands.... but I like heavier guitars with big baseball bat necks.... I perfer LP, Tele and strat type guitars... strat style Jacksons/Charvels with pointy headstocks look good on me when I have long hair... with short hair... not so good

I'm 5'8" and 235 and around 7 1/4 and it doesnt influence what I play at all. Could be because I've been married for 17 years now though. The more important question is does it hang to the left or the right and does that change how you hold your guitar, regardless of what type of guitar?

I'm a big guy, 160 LBS and I use strats because they are sturdy. My main squeeze is a modified Voodoo strat, fitted with a black pickguard and Dimarzio pickups.

That guitar is the one that really got me into playing maple neck'ed guitars, it plays smooth as butter.

As for weight, I'd say she's a medium, which is fine with me since I move a lot on stage and need a guitar that enables me to do so without me going "Ouch, my shoulder!" after the gig's done. What IS heavy about my guitars are the string gauges, I favor 011 sets because they give me that powerful grunt and make the guitar harder to play, so when tuning down a full step for the band, I can play with ease while still have the guitar fighting back a bit. Another thing I favor are big necks, one of the reasons why I bought that Voodoo strat is that it has this big Louisville slugger neck that can take a lot of abuse and still come back for more.

Which is also why I can't play modren day Ibanez guitars like the RG with their sleek and flat necks, they make my hand cramp up. I had a Gibson SG, lovely guitar but I hated the way it played, sometimes I feared that I would snap the poor girl in half.

I like to eat boiled eggs on my guitar and smash a few of them down between the strings.

I personally do not care how it was built as long as it is a good playing/sounding instrument.
