You do realize that the moron behind the counter probably started that morning and was given 3 minutes' training on how to ring up a sale?
And the online inventory vs store inventory has always confused me. How in the hell can we NOT have, in the 21st Century, a cheap reliable computer-based inventoy system where the online store updates automatically when the physical inventory is changed and vise versa?
You computer programmers out there do realize that when you hit the market with that system, and it sells and installs for less than $500 per customer (not per computer or per store or per employee, but per customer - Best Buy, WalMart, GC, Fred's, K-Mart, etc etc), you'll be an overnight millionaire, right?
What's most sad, and funny, in '92 I was using a Dbase (DOS based) program with a hand scanner and it told me right away what was going on.
It would still work today!
I only did it to keep track of the CD's in the store, and what needed to be restocked.
KISS method.
I go there to try things out, it's the only purpose. Although you can order it online and return it, and then they sell them as blems for a bit cheaper lol, I guess you are helping everyone out just order online. But I rarely go there anyways because it's too noisey and nobody knows what they are doing. I went to try an amp I'm like, hey can I hear how it sounds with this OD pedal. So the dipshit is like yeah, and 5 mins later there is an amp in a box sitting there and he's like ok. I'm like I wanted to try it with that OD pedal not buy it. He is like 'oooohhhh' ... lol... so then he gets me the pedal. Lol. They do a huge amount of business when I'm there tho so plus it's really the only oppurtunity I have to go and see new stuff and look at it as there are not many music stores around. And I feel slightly guilty to buy something online just to try it.

I work for a pretty big company (shipping)
I can (real time ) track a package anywhere in the world !!However this may be cost prohibitive for a relativily small chain , that dosn't really fucking care anyway ~~~~~~ customer service is dead , my friend !!
Enjoying a rum and coke, just didn't have any coke...

hate to disagree with you Matt, but a company which paid close to a million dollars for the Blackie (Eric clapton's strat), $550,000 for SRV's strat, $800,000 for Eric Clapton's Gibson ES cant spend more time/Money to educate its employees how to treat a customer? IMO, they want people with tattoos, piercings and what not to display the typical hard-rocker's looks. It seems those looks and a willingness to voluntarily work at GC come with a pea-size brain. :ROTF:
Here we go again. First off. The Online GC doesnt have the ability to look up what we have in our stores. It's two completely independant networks. I don't know why they say it's available at the store except for maybe it being a norlal stock item and an "incidental addon" and should usually be in stock. (which we all know is not the case)
As far as the "loser" employees. They are usually either high school kids or justout of HS. thinkng it's a cool gigi to sit around all day and play guitar. And try to show off some skill if they have any. Even if they don't of course they still think they do. I have one at my store. Actually 2. Both in accessories. One is about my age and is trying But not qite getting it. The other just turned 20. He's a cocky kid who thinks he knows everything But still comes to those of us who realy do know what we're talking about. (for the most part) There will always be the "idiot" employee no matter where ya go. If they don;t get it quickly enough they get fired. Then the next snot nosed loser comes in. Etc... etc.. etc.... It's a vicious cycle. I've seen it all to often. There are some excellent employees at GC. Some of them are former pro musicains (dave Schenkle comes to mind) And do know whats goin on and what actually works on the road etc..
granted they are few and far between and not at every store. I know the guys at my store with the exception of the 2 mentioned all know thier shit. especailly the vets. like myself and most of the guitar guys. The Audio guys at my store are amazing. I even have a pro world toured drummer in my drum dept. Guys with degrees in music (actually 3 of the guys are currently on tour with devil driver on the west coast. (Rosengaurd). The newbies will alwasy be there. Just dont go to them until they get at least a working knowledge of the gear they sell. Just look for the crusty vet. And you'll get the help you need. You dont stop going to resturants cus the wait staff changes do ya? the food is still the same. Give me a break. if yo know more than the sales guy
maybe inform him a bit and just buy what you need and leave. Bitchin about it doesnt make it any better. Just ads to the drama of the "Ideal" of what GC is. Buy online.
Buy from mom and pops what ever. There will still be a newbie handling your purchase some where along the line. Just my 2 cents

And there we have it. That's where the failure is.
Standardization, communication, and total integration are 3 key elements GC needs today. It's not something they need to run through a committee, it's something they need to implement within the next 48 hours. It's not prohibitively expensive, it's not going to cause more problems, and it doesn't take an act of Congress to do, as long as you remember 2 things:
1. It has to be done.
2. It's worth the money.
Those are the only considerations.
Unfortunately, most business types are still trying to figure out how to get everything for free. They still see spending $1 to make $5 as a $1 loss, because $1 had to go out in the first place.

I love GC..its the best music store we have in our area IMO. My cuz owns a nice store but its a bit far from me. He doesn't carry too much other than Peavey and Marshall. I have carte blanche at GC. I get to play with all the knobs. I help myself to whatever guitar and amp I wanna play. They give me whatever I ask for, allen wrench, whammy bar, picks, strap ect whenever I'm trying gear. I don't go there too ofen..but they seem to like my smiling face. The best thing is the never tell me to turn down or don't touch..instead they'll walk by and throw the horns. I'm able to get amps up to moderate levels there. Sometimes band levels at short burst if I ask. My kid loves hangin' out there. He gets his props whenever he plays drums. The dudes in the drum dept always treat him really nice..some know him since he was 7.
Sure there goofballs everywhere like Joe stated. Some people just wanna get thru the day doing little as possible. That's everywhere..its frustrating. I was in home depot the other day. Try asking for help at a fuggin' home depot. Customer service is a thing of the past. Every since people started packing their own grocery bags. Now you can check out your own groceries. How in the fuck does that work? Remember service stations when you were a kid. You pull in for gas..they pump it, check your oil, clean your windshield. Put air in your tires. Now its 75 cents for 3 minutes of air that you do yourself. Customers do everything themselves including swiping their gas cards. I don't think they have full service gas stations anymore, or not many. Employess are slowly being replaced by consumers...and we pay more to do the work ourselves.

That is true of 97% of the places you go these days. Nobody cares anymore. Retail is the worst. Restaurants aren't as bad because the staff rely on the tips.
The price is the price, and that's it (per the manager, Nashua, NH store).
Don't even ask for a free chord if you buy a $700 Ibanez, and a $450 amp.
HUH?
That was m first and last purchase at GC, thanks.
Bring that to corporate!
