It's odd, I find myself hating shred that sounds like complete balls. I personally HATE rusty cooley's guitar playing, as good as he is, it's not music.

Compare and contrast him to Jason Becker and Cooley doesn't even stand a chance. People like Jason, Marty, Govan, Lane, etc.. Are technically inclined, but they also have a common goal. To creature MUSIC, not to play faster than person B.

I'm pretty sure the guy could play something useful. He probably has the ability. But the "shred" parts he did were annoying to my ears. No feeling. No emotion. No soul. Just robotic-like. "Hey, Look at me. I can sweep really fast. I am so cool." Meh. Sounded like fingernails on a chalkboard. The dude needs to sit down and give a long listen to some Al Di Meola and take notes.
In an insane world, only the sane seem crazy.

Ahh well I like Shawn Lane he was pretty good and Yngwie played music not always widdly-widdly stuff. Sometimes Rusty Cooley isn't always doing robotic scales and actually will play something musical but almost all the videos always showing him wanking off mechanical runs he is actually capable of playing decent music sometimes.

That dude has a myspace with some songs so you can hear him play but it was mostly nintendo metal.

Would the fastest guitarist be one who played on Concorde?

speed for the sake of speed is a dead end...speed is merely a tool to allow you to get a point across...if your point IS speed...you have missed the concept entirely...the goal with playing, to me, is to enjoy it and possibly create something someone else enjoys ie:music...what i saw in the video was not music...sorry...d.m.

The other thing I wonder about this guy is whether he could play that lick without any distortion. I've always had immense respect for the really fast country players, who don't have gain or compression to hide any picking mistakes.

Frankly, the distortion he's using makes it hard to tell whether he's really picking all those notes--it comes off as a bit of a blur.

I don't kid myself, though--I'd love to have that kind of picking speed. But that's one particular technique, and there are so many other facets to being a good player. Think of those studio guys who can effortlessly switch from metal to jazz to country, and do all of them well. That amazes me a lot more than speed picking.

Ever notice that guys like this cannot come up with any cool rythyms or riffs at all? Even Yngwie I can't recall any cool riffs-just solos.

He doesnt impress me from a musical melodical stand point, but I can certainly respect the time and effort that he has obviously put into devolping his speed.
Seems too cocky for the lack of videos that he has uploaded on youtube. Like he's a one trick pony.
