  • Gar Samuelson = God

I've never in my life played guitar hero or apparently another game out called "Rockband."

Now you may be wondering, what does this have to do with Gar?

    Wait for it.

I've always thought of Gar Samuelson as one of the most under-rated and genius drummers of the thrash era. Better than Menza IMO, he just didn't wind up on Rust In Peace.

Either way, I'm a huge fan of drums and drummers because I can't play them for shit. Watching insane drummers like Gene Hoglan, makes me go

So I was searching through Youtube at work the other day for one of my favorite songs "Good Mourning/Black Friday," and some video of a guy playing the game "Rockband" comes up, and he's doing the drum parts with a zoom on his foot and stuff.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjg8Co8QAF4 (It gets awesome at 4:10)

Yeah, the game looks pretty corny but still it was pretty fucking wicked to watch, and I can only imagine how much more intense it is with a real drum kit. That, and picturing Gar playing this shit DEAD ACCURATELY made it even better.

Yeah, my day has been boring so far.

LOL, I just realized the hi-hat and crash are the same piece as the toms and snare.

I saw what you did there.

I know he passed away, I guess I'm reminiscing about some guy I've never met.

My kid is a maniac on his Sonors. His faves are Dave lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Nick Barker, Terry Bozzio, and Dave Weckl..amoung others. He's been listening to alot of Bill Ward and John Bonham. He was amazed what Bill Ward did on a four piece during a old War Pigs vid..man , he hits 'em hard!!!! My kid was actually laughing, which made me laugh.

He discovered old school drummers have better chops, rolls, flams and ect. Alot of new school drummers are more feet oriented. So it's good to have a balance of both.

He's been slacking because of basketball season. I was all over him yesterday because he couldn't hang with me. He's not on his game when he doesn't play 'em for a month...eh..

yep, it's all in the nuances... those rolls, paradiddles and shit is the hard part. No wonder why people are afraid to even try to play Buddy Rich drum solos.
Back in the day folks had to get their jazz chops down to make it. These days there's a lot of smoke and mirrors... fast simple rolls over the toms and kicks... but a lot of people buy it...so fuggums... cool that Vin appreciates the old stuff

Most new drummers use the double bass and blast beast far too much.

the sad part is... they don't bother to learn even that correctly... so many drummers are sloppy as hell on their blasts... ruining the whole band with that shit.... if you want to play something... get your timing PERFECT... or just piss off... drummer's primary job is to keep the tempo and beat.. if they can't do that... then there's always oboe or something :ROTF:

Actually, I couldn't have said that better.

The last few drummers we've tried out, couldn't keep tempo what so ever.

Their main influences were bands like Suffocation.

Hey Bill, surely you've turned your son on to Ian Paice and Deep Purple! There may be lots of guys flashier, but to me, he's rock solid!

I don't know man... he was technically the most advanced out of all the old school rock drum gods... that one handed roll is pretty flashy stuff and HARD

Why do people think that being able to play a song in Rock Band equates to being able to actually play the song on a real instrument?

I hope you're not directing that at me, because I clearly acknowledged it in the OP.

I just thought it was bad ass for a video game.

I fully realize what you're saying but for drums I kinda have to disagree. I mean, it's not going to teach you everything but those drums are pretty hard. You can hook up Electronic drumkits to those games now so basically playing it is like telling you what to play as if you were reading sheet music. The guitar is useless but I think that after playing drums on it long enough that I could keep a basic rock beat going. It definitely teaches rhythm and I have found myself counting in my head and subdividing at points.
