Is your Cobra EFI, or carb?
    T5 trans?
Dude, I can't turn a screw, and don't want to..ever. I let people much more qualified than myself do that stuff. I just drive 'em man. Actually there is very well known local Cobra guy in town. He is THE man when it comes to building FFRs. He has a large garage with a few lifts and buddies working around the clock building several FFR Cobras. He and his buds have built approx 50 of them. Every local cobra guy knows him. Even though Factory Five has everything you need, there is still many refinements that he discovered along the way from years of building them. Basically, the standard kit calls for a Mustang donor motor..I have a bone stock '88 5.0 in mine, T5 tranny, and 3:55 gears. That is the "optimum" set up. Since it only weighs 2065 lbs the accelartion is fucking nuts..0-6 in about 3.5 seconds. It's prolly in the 12's with me driving it. I NEVER owned a car with a manual transmission before I bought the Cobra. My father taught me how to drive it. My father on the other hand is a fuggin' maniac! 'He's positive the car is easily in the 11's with him driving it. He just plants his foot to the floor and bangs thru gears like nothing..he's MUCH better than I am. But I'm getting better. Well, I haven't lost a race yet, and everyone wants to try me (wouldn't you?). When I'm bored with the power/speed I have on tap. I'll think of adding headers which I'll prolly do this summmer, it'll sound nice too. 60 extra horses will make a big difference in that thing. Eventually I may add a small supercharger. I don't think I'll go NOS, because I'll always want power on tap without the hassle. The guy that built mine actually helped a freind of Jay Leno with one of his three FFR cobras. Jay has one with a 351 windsor and two with stock 302. I'm told the 302 is actually faster and more responsive than the 351 outta the whole and about equal in the 1/4 mile. Besides you can go nuts building a 302. FFR Cobra builder Jeff Hamilton has one with a 351, a '72 Pantera with the money I bought mine with. A mint 65 Mustang GT-500 and he just built a FFR supercar on a C5 frame with a 5.7..He stated I'm just a hair faster in the 1/4 mile BUT he's has a top end just over 200MPH...wow. The fastest I had mine was about 140MPH, it had ALOT more BUT the front end started to lift and I could feel the loss of traction in the steerring wheel..that's not good!!! I could go much faster if I had a foil or some shit to keep it down..but that'll look ugly on a Cobra. I don't care too much about top end anywhoo..140 is fast enough especially when it gets there is no time. I NEVER take it to the track, I just don't want to beat on it all day. I already know it's fast..I gauge it against cars such as a ZO6 or Viper which is supposed to run a quarter in 13 flat or under. My dad races motorcycles constantly..and really he knows his bikes, and beat bikes that are in the easy 12's. So, obviosly I'm in the 11's with him driving it. That just a stock 5.0. So, I really don't need to go crazy buiding my motor. Adding a set of headers and a small blower would make this absolutely insane. Getting this thing into the 10's or 9's shouldnt be that expensive or difficult. If I had Clevo- John's or some of your motors in this thing it would well..WTF!!!

Man, those cobra inlays rule!!!! Hey man, My sis, bought me a XL black cobra pleather jacket..with a big ol' cobra on the back. I'll never wear it. I dunno what she paid for it..I keep it in the trunk of the cobra in case it get's chilly. But the cockpit is hot as hell..even with the weather in the high 40s, low 50's!!!

    • 60 extra horses from bolting on a set of headers??? What kind are those??
That number is a little high to me, maybe 30-40 at the most.

There's no such thing as a 65 Mustang GT-500, '67 was the first year, so that's probably what year your buddy has.

1965 was the first year for a Shelby and they had 289's in them and they were a GT-350. 1966 was also a GT-350 with the 289.
      The '67 GT-350 had a 289HiPo just like the 65-66, but the '68 GT-350 had the 302. The 69-70's GT-350's had a 351 Windsor 4v.

From 1967-1970 there were both GT-350's and GT-500's. The GT-500's had 428CJ's in them, and the 1970's were nothing more than left over '69s which were re-titled.

Panteras are cool rides man! I sat in a Pantera once, but I wasn't allowed to drive it what I really like about them is that they all came with 351 Clevelands, which is my fav motor. They sort of had an Italian styling to them kind of like a Ferrari in some respects.

Yeah Horns, being your car is so damn light, it will take you less $$$ to make it just as fast if not faster than most mustang guys.
Since you're not much for the top end speed, you should consider a set of 4.10's for that Cobra. That will sit you back in your seat, and probably knock your 0-60 times down considerably.
Although your 0-60 in 3.5 seconds is very fast as is. Did you have it timed?
I know that your car is light at a shade over 2,000lbs, but 3.5 seconds is kind of hard for me to believe, considering your motor is bone stock, and you only have 3.55 gears.
But hey I'm not gonna bust your balls too much, cause like you said, you dont build 'em you only drive them. Sweet ass car none the less no doubt!

Yeah you're prolly right on the year "Stang. I'm not very knowlegable on the years and models. All I know is that's uber clean, red with white. He never drives that one. I did drive the Pantera..I was disappointed in the speed really. I was expecting alot more. It hardly broke outta the hole. Jeff told me it's in the high 14's with the 351..kinda weird set up. You sit crooked in the damn thing and I bumped my head getting in and out of it, and I'm only 5' 8". He always wanted one though, it's looks damnd cool. Yeah, he insisted that these headers would add 60 hp, I can't tell which ones. I can only take his word for it. I talked to him about 4:10 gears ..he and Clevelandmetal John both insisted NO WAY..he did a couple with 4:10 gears and put 3:55 back in them. He say I would be just throwing away first gear all together and maybe get 20 feet out of it. I was thinking of putting 4:10 in the fucker too, until I was advised strongly not to by both these guys that know better. Honestly the way I break loose with what I have I can see why. Dude, you would freak if you went for a ride in it...it throws you back BIG TIME! I could go 3:73s but it wouldn't worth the time, effort and money..I guess 3:55 are the way to go with these Cobra replicas. That's what FFR actually recommends.

          • If and when I ever get me another Fox body, I won't be building a drag car. I'm going to build it up as a road racer, I have a shitload of 5.0 and other Mustang mags around here somewhere, and in one issue some guy had taken an 85 Fox and turned it into the most badass road racer I've ever seen. It had a custom IRS with 5 lug conversion all around, huge Baer brakes, and awesome looking Fikse rims, low profile hi-perf tires. It was lowered substantially, and had a lot of work done to stiffen the frame. The motor was built for top end with a supercharger. I believe the car still did highly respectable 1/4 mile times, but could also hold its own against Porsches and the like on a road course. I'm gonna have to find that mag.

            • Horns, yeah with your T-5 trans, which has a 3.35:1 first gear ratio, you won't need alot to get it moving, and 4.10's might be too much with your trans, therefore making 1st gear useless.
So you could then start out in 2nd gear to compensate. Your second gear ratio should either be 1.94 or 1.99 which is like a close ratio first gear and would theoretically be a better 1st gear anyway. And coupled with the 4.10 gear, it would be better for the street, and you wouldn't have to shift gears as soon.

Either that, or I'd opt to slap in an old toploader 4 speed, cause they are stronger and have better gear ratio's. But no overdrive though...so it's a trade off.

You are right on about those Panteras being low to the ground man! Holy shit! I'm only 5'8 and the roof was at the middle of my chest. And it felt like you were sitting on the road.
Being the engine is mid mounted and right behind you, I could only imagine how noisy they were inside.

Dude, I guarantee that your FFR is a beast, I'm not doubting that one bit, and even with a stock 302 and 3.55's I'm sure it'll eat up about anything on the road. 3.73's would probably be too much unless you plan on a cam, headers and other mod's to it, then they would be the obvious next step. And with your 5th gear, you'd still be running a decent lower rpm to help with gas mileage.
I really like FFR's Daytona Coupe kits alot. And aren't they making a GT-40 replica now? Those are really sweet rides!

Thank you nhspike, this one with the Cobra inlays is special to me because it was the first custom shop I ever ordered and it had some special features. The very first new USA Jackson I bought was my PCS Rhoads, I was so impressed by it that I spec'd the Cobra one to be poplar body with ebony fret board and small fret wire. I didn't care about the binding nibs so I skipped that but got it in 24 fret. The Mystic paint was not readily available at the time, it was used on the special edition 96 Mystic Cobra Mustangs and you could not just buy the paint from BASF, the original supplier. But, you could buy touch up bottles of it from the Ford dealership so I talked Tim Wilson into using those at the custom shop. He used to joke before the move to Corona that he still had a bottle of it around the custom shop in case my guitar ever came back for any paint work Pleased to report that 10 years later there are no dings in it BTW, the inlays are featured on the inside back cover of the 2000 Jackson catalog but for some reason they made the picture a computerized filtered pic or whatever its called. I think they should have just shown the abalone/MOP combo.

I don't believe I've seen headers get more than prolly 15 hp, unless the other mods were screaming for exhaust.

And 60 HP would mean heads, appropriate intake, and generic shorty headers. You'd prolly get a lil more than 60 on that.

I've seen stock cams get into the 11's with fox bodies, so probably not needed yet.

I like the twist on hood locks and the shaker scoop alot!

I saw a Yellow Stang online with the 69 style Boss 302 Stripes, and it looked really good.
I am in love with these late model Stangs because they are so close in appearance to the older ones.
I was kinda hoping that they would do a 65-66 style for the 05-06, then a 67-68 style for the 07-08 years, and then a 69,70, etc...

Right now with the aftermarket parts avail, you can pretty much emulate any year though.
I'd probaly go a similiar route to what you did, or possibly a 69 Boss 302 or 429 look.

Hey, thank you. Yeah, I have seen the kits from Cervini's. Kind of expensive though. My car is pretty much where I want it 'looks wise' at the moment. It has the C Stripes on the side. They are just hard to see at the angle the pic was taken.

This was taken before I added the twist lock hood pins.
