In your opinion, the niche writer has no claim simply because he lacks some perceived level of popularity?
i'm just saying i don't see how it encroaches upon any profit he makes in his niche market....so why the bother? he just sounds liek he wants an excuse for the money, which is sad

hell, this has been going on since the beginning of music.

Led Zepplin stole the theme for "stairway to heaven" from part of Spirit's song "Taurus".

Beck's "Loser" is Allman Brothers "Midnight Rider" tuned down.

At the Gates should just sue every metalcore band. hehheh.

You have it backwards. It's not about encroachment.
It's about Coldplay profiting off of Joe's work.

And I don't think Joe has any money issues.
Ever been to one of his concerts? I've been to many and they were always sold out.

Tim... I agree.. I think both songs suck too.
But that's not the point here.

Was it Vivaldi who said, "Good artists borrow, great artists steal"? I think it was. Satch is a whore? We already knew that. With all this music, all these musicians and now in this age where anyone can publish, the courts could eventually reverse themselves on this sort of thing. Maybe this case goes to trial, but I'd wager Coldplay would win. There's no way any of those guys listen to Satch and there's got to be at least a couple public domain works with that melody over those changes. Gay wasn't invented in 2004!

Coldplay have stolen from the Great One. The sentence is death.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

            I nearly broke her back

WTF? Coldplay has stolen from Steve Vai?
I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

maybe they are doing it because Joe stoled from Los Enanitos Verdes? :ROTF:

If you play guitar, you've heard of Satch, or you live under a rock. You may or may not like what you've heard, but you've heard it. What you're suggesting is being a driver and not having heard of Schumacher.

More likely that the record company lawyers are. Sometimes the artist has nothing to do with stuff like this. But anyhow why not listen to Coldplay. Not my cup of tea but I see the appeal in their music (yes I'm a pussy).

Wasn't there some other no-name band suing coldplay for plagiarism over this exact same song about a year back?!

Its a very common chord progression and melody. It has appeared many many times in different variations. I am sure that Coldplay didn't rip of Satch and Satch didn't rip off the many other versions of it. I like Satch's version the best. Did I ever tell you guys that I wrote a song back in the mid 80's at Power Play Studio's in the Bronx that is almost note for note Jeanie in a Bottle by Christina Aguealara? I should have sued. I still have a cassette copy of it from around 1985.

It's obvious Christina heard that in 1985, when she was 5 years old, and totally ripped you off! :ROTF:
