Wasn't there some other no-name band suing coldplay for plagiarism over this exact same song about a year back?!

More likely that the record company lawyers are. Sometimes the artist has nothing to do with stuff like this. But anyhow why not listen to Coldplay. Not my cup of tea but I see the appeal in their music (yes I'm a pussy).

If you play guitar, you've heard of Satch, or you live under a rock. You may or may not like what you've heard, but you've heard it. What you're suggesting is being a driver and not having heard of Schumacher.

Was it Vivaldi who said, "Good artists borrow, great artists steal"? I think it was. Satch is a whore? We already knew that. With all this music, all these musicians and now in this age where anyone can publish, the courts could eventually reverse themselves on this sort of thing. Maybe this case goes to trial, but I'd wager Coldplay would win. There's no way any of those guys listen to Satch and there's got to be at least a couple public domain works with that melody over those changes. Gay wasn't invented in 2004!

You have it backwards. It's not about encroachment.
It's about Coldplay profiting off of Joe's work.

And I don't think Joe has any money issues.
Ever been to one of his concerts? I've been to many and they were always sold out.

Tim... I agree.. I think both songs suck too.
But that's not the point here.

hell, this has been going on since the beginning of music.

Led Zepplin stole the theme for "stairway to heaven" from part of Spirit's song "Taurus".

Beck's "Loser" is Allman Brothers "Midnight Rider" tuned down.

At the Gates should just sue every metalcore band. hehheh.

Plagiarism is plagiarism. Ones stature in an industry, real or perceived, is irrelevant.

In your opinion, the niche writer has no claim simply because he lacks some perceived level of popularity?
