Endrik - CDs have a wider frequency range than vinyl. Those 1s and 0s that make up a CD can cover the entire audible spectrum. With vinyl, you have a more narrow spectrum because the depth of the groove determines the frequency of the note. The blade can only cut so deep. Heavier platters (I have a Hendrix LP made from 170 gram vinyl) can take deeper cuts, and therefore can have a wider frequency range, but the vast majority of vinyl albums were not that thick.
Then you have magnetic tape: if the signal is too hot or the frequency is too low or too high, the tape flutters against the recording head and you don't get a good recording.
As I said before, it's all about the needle. With analog (tape and vinyl) you can tickle the Peak zone and get that signature analog tone. With digital, you can't cross that edge without ruining the sound.
Cyg - Build a tube home stereo. You'll like it.
When you're done with that, build a tube Home Theater system. My guess is that the sound quality will make you orgasm.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Well come on Steven, "Why do Jimi Hendrix albums sound like shit?" sounds like someone is trying to start shit.
Back to the subject of the OP, here's my answer: It's just you.

Hendrix rules. His music rules. Those albums rule. Some of the greatest guitar tones and production ever.
Of course, it's no comparison to the over compressed, sterile, homogenized, bullshit we have today. Christ, the new shit like Nickelsuck, GnR, or McTallica is embarrassing to listen to after you hear Electric Ladyland.I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.

I'm not a huge Hendrix fan but I appreciate what he did, which is paving the way for everyone after him.
For the times he was extremely innovative in his writing and even the productions.
Shit, even with technology and all the auto-correction that goes on to mask talent today ...suck...I personally hate over corrected and overly produced material. Its rock and roll folks, not meant to be 100% perfect and follow all the rules. Some of the best shit that stands the test of time were raw and simplistic in terms of recording and production.shawnlutz.com

If some alien would visit earth to find out who's the MVP of guitarists and he (she/it) would interview the 100 most famous guitar players of 2008, he would return home and say: Jimi Hendrix !
Because 99 % of the interviewed guys would have named him as a main influence/inspiration !
And they would not have named him (only) because of his technical skills, but because he brought in a new dimension - in any way !
Recently I watched the "Live in Monterey" - DVD ... and I was (again) stunned by the power of his perfomance and his music (except for the smashing/burning his guitar) -
and his recordings deliver that, too !
And the "sound" of his recordings is the logical result of his "approach" !
So ... Hendrix' albums aren't crap. Just put them in the "right" context !uva uvam vivendo varia fit
