Luckily my wife knew well enough to tell me before we went to my brother's house, so I got it all out of my system before hand. By the time we actually got there I had accepted the fact that I was having chinese take-out for Christmas dinner.
...
We all agreed at thanksgiving to have Christmas dinner at my Brother's house this year because Mom is getting up there in age, and is just tired of all the work that it takes. Christmas is a tiring holiday in itself, and it does take a lot of work. So I do understand why they decided not to
cook a traditional dinner.
I guess what really upset me (you know besides lying to me) is that no one even considered to ask my opinion, or if I'd cook the dinner this year, which I would have agreed to without even blinking.
Christmas is an important holiday for my family because for one day a year everyone puts aside all the dramatic bullshit and just has a nice time together. We have some pretty long-standing Christmas traditions in my family and all of them were broken this year.

Ahhh. Sorry I misunderstood. I focused on the one part of your post & my "Dad" instinct kicked in. You were right to be pissed about them hiding it from you. I like Holidays to be traditional too, so I know where you're coming from.

Makes me feel bad. On Christmas eve we had nice sausage and peppers sandwiches and the next day we had ham, rigatoni with meatballs and sausages, shrimp and garlic etc.Scott

Lame!
My mother-in-law is recovering from breast cancer and heart surgery. And she was up the night before rolling homemade noodles with a rolling pin and hand cutting them with a knife.
I just can't fathom how 2 young adults can't even muster throwing a turkey in the oven and setting a timer AFTER they've already set expectations of a no-surprises Christmas dinner to their guests. But that's just me (and obviously you).

I understand the too ill or on the mend to make dinner situation. We just stay home with the two boys and have a nice and quiet holiday. I will tell you one thing though, I am not eating anymore KFC. My mom worked there in the early 80's and used to tell me stories about the chicken. About a month ago I went and picked up a family meal. Two pieces were left the next day. I took them to work and warmed them up. When I removed the skin the frigging meat was black. Not good, believe me, it wasnt just a bruised chicken. They KFC'ed some nasty rotten chicken. I didnt tell the family the details, but I will never eat there again.Remember, Wherever you go,.. there you are

When I look back on it I really am happy that I got to spend time with the family, that's what really matters, right?
There were people that had a lot less to be happy about this year than me.

ha ha that's too bad that you apparently are in an area where chinese food = shitty food and shitty quality. I do know what that is like, having lived in PA and the midwest.
when we lived in San Francisco, chinese takeout meant heaps and heaps of the most awesome food, each dish better than the next. boy those were the days for eating. I'd have loved chinese food in SF on xmas.the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
