It does sound whacky, I know, but people find various ways to cling to their past. Hanging out with the guy who used to hang out with your best friends is part of that physical connection. Maybe he was ready to sever that physical connection but couldn't put it inot words because he wasn't consciously thinking of you as that physical link to the past.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

Echoing what has been said already- You will be amazed at just how little contact you have with high school friends pretty shortly after your senior year. I don't know if you plan on going to college, but as soon as I did we all just grew apart.
Now that I'm quite a few years out of college, I have exactly 4 friends that I consider "friends". In highschool I thought I had probably 100.
I am much better off now than I was then. These guys would take a bullet for me, and vice versa.
You will see as the years go by "friends" will fall away, and the friends you end up keeping will be so very very different from the "friends" that you had in high school that using the term to refer to those "old" friends will almost seem like an insult to what friendship really is.
Are they friends or drinking/party buddies? Are they friends or part of your "crew" that you roll with to go out and have a few beers? I know they feel at times like the same thing, but they ain't.
Now, my wife has friends from highschool that she's kept, and that's just how it worked out for her..... we're 16 years out of highschool now and these ladies are the "real deal".... That's how it worked out for her. Not for me. Either way, you're going to be fine.
