  • Anyone live near Yellowstone ?

It seems like there has been a lot of activity here lately. 252+ earthquakes in the span of a week?

"I am advising all State officials around Yellowstone National Park for a potential State of Emergency. In the last week over 252 earthquakes have been observed by the USGS. We have a 3D view on the movement of magma rising underground. We have all of the pre warning signs of an eruption from a super volcano. - I want everyone to leave Yellowstone National Park and for 200 miles around the volcano caldera because of the danger in poisonous gasses that can escape from the hundreds of recent earthquakes. These poisonous gasses that can escape from underneath a lake present even more of a potential problem because of the super volcano."

Anyone who lives in this area, what are your thoughts? A freaking super volcano?

With this being quite unusual it's strange that I've seen nothing in the news.

Scary stuff, but Yellowstone has been doing that for thousands of years.
Every credible seismologist and geologist say there is no threat of a catastrophic eruption.

In a study released last year, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said possible hazards could include hydrothermal explosions, when steam breaks through the surface and forms a crater. That has happened 26 times in the park's 127 years of record-keeping. The USGS discounted chances for cataclysmic eruption of the caldera, noting that the hot, active magma chamber below Yellowstone has turned into "largely crystallized mush." But the same study also said: "Depending on the nature and magnitude of a particular hazardous event and the particular time and season when it might occur, 70,000 to more than 100,000 persons could be affected; the most violent events could affect a broader region or even continent-wide areas."

Apparently the guy quoted also has some YouTube videos up. A google search shows him as the CEO of "New World Order, Inc".

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

Comes across like a dip. Which is what I think he is.

        Vass, good call.

But if anyone lives near yellowstone, what's your opinion ? Is it business as usual?

Remember people thought Columbus with his 'the world is not flat' theory was ridiculed as well !:ROTF:

There's a reason its called a super volcano and a reason that there's a calderra there, it has erupted before. Granted this recent activity is likely not anything to worry about, any change in normal behavior shouldn't be ignored.

Jayster- you are quite right. And the damn thing COULD blow sky high as I post this....but I don't think this guy's predictions has anything to do with it.

We see something very similar on Wall Street right now...there were a handful of Cassandras that were claiming that the economy was going to go off the rails, that housing was going to blow up, whatever..... if it hadn't happened, they would have been ignored. But it did, and now they're celebrities.

Getting that one high profile prediction right, even if you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, or are in fact utterly insane, "makes" your entire career.

I could sit back and say, "Guess what? F it. Dow 15000 by the end of 2009". And if somehow it happened, you'd see me on the cover of Money Magazine, in a badass suit, with one arm folded across my chest & another one scratching my chin as I stared at you from the news rack, with the headline "THE MAN WHO PREDICTED THE GREATEST BULL RUN IN HISTORY".... and then in smaller type, "What he's saying now, what it means for the markets, and what it means for your portfolio".

And then I'd start talking about the prices of DKMGs vs DK2's, and how their pricing indicates a continuing rally in housing as people upgraded space to fit more wallhangers, and you would finally realize that I was rat-shit whacko, but too damn late.....you already bought the magazine.

EDIT- I see UFOROCKS post now...to be clear, I have absolutely no idea if Yellowstone is going to blow sky high. I know about as much about it as I see on the internet- which makes me an instant expert! But I am pretty sure that's how this guy got his credentials, too.

I have an undergrad from Google University and a Masters from Wikipedia School of Topicality!

Hah, I crack myself up. Google University. That's good shit.

              :ROTF: @ Vass

Yeah the Science Channel has been trumpeting this Yellowstone supervolcano smack for a while now. There's solid science behind it all, to be sure. The problem is, it may erupt today.....or a million years from now. They can't be very precise with their forecasts.

Interesting...there hasn't been a super volcano eruption in quite some time. However, if the increase in activity really pointed towards a major eruption, I think we'd be hearing more about it.

And if yellowstone blows, moving 200 miles away wouldn't help.

I'm really not buying into the super volcano death theory, but that seems to be an amazing amount of earthquake activity. It's probably a better indicator that California will fall into the ocean(which by the way, is sure to be an inside job !!!)

I'll try to find some historical data, to see if this really is an annomaly !!!

Vass - I think you're a little off on a 15,000 djia. I would more realistically expect 4,500 - 6,000 by years end. I'm taking my suit to the dry cleaners now(for my magazine cover).:ROTF:

Any members in the Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Montana, Nebraska or Dakota's area? Or any seismologists?
