Pretty interesting. My theory is that some of the newspaper's staff, or possibly some faculty came up with the idea to get students to do some independent study and maybe actually learn something while they were in school, rather than just the usual cram, regurgitate, party, repeat. The cost of taking out the ads would've supposedly run up to over $20k over the years, so that would make it a pretty expensive prank.Comment

If your theory is correct, they've kept it going for about thirty years. In the end there's likely to be a mundane explanation - kids (now old guys!) having a laugh or whatever. But it's still incredibly interesting.Comment

and of course the Zodiac Killer. That one has driven some people batshitinsane. One of the Zodiac boards supposedly had to tighten down access after they found out one member was an actual copycat murderer.Comment

Yeah I've read a few things about the Voynich before, that's cool too. Not read much, if anything about Zodiac - didn't dirty Harry sort that guy out?!
