I know it's UK based, but you might get a kick out of some of the old abandoned shite around here. My favourites are the old asylums, huge Victorian forbidding places, fantastic architecture, usually in massive walled grounds, closed by the penny-pinchers in Govt. and awaiting redevelopment. There's a surprising amount of them about, and a lot look like they just slammed the doors one day, boarded the windows and fucked off and forgot about them.
There's all kinds of places you drive by every day and don't take in that they are empty, or even know what they are for - they're the best, when you suddenly realise there is a massive secluded manor house/hotel/hospital etc just down the road, and that it has been empty for 10 years, and no-one even "sees" it when they drive by.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

    I nearly broke her back

I really want to get into urban exploration, but I'm such a wuss, I'm afraid of getting busted for trespassing. Plus I don't even know of any places around here that would be cool to explore.
      Sleep!!, That's where I'm a viking!!

Peeling paint has to be the creepiest thing ever. It just gives off a vibe of "no one lives here".

Nice. The Disney hotel thing in Ron's link looks like a friggen project housing slum/ghetto. Fabulous.

I like the one in Queensland - the hotel owner was the last remaining permanent resident

I'd have petitioned the gov't to sell me the town, then lobby for a major highway to be run through the town with no on/off access, then draw subsidies from the gov't for the noise and loss of income
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Ghost Hunters should do a tour of abandoned hotels. You know some people have met untimely ends in those places!

some great links here! I've just spent about 3 hours going through a lot of them. I get a bit melancholy looking at some, particularly the schools - thinking of all the kids that spent their entire school lives there, the team logos/mascots on the walls, the empty trophy case in one of the schools. And the homes & offices where people had left their belongings behind, like their personal photographs. Why wouldn't you take that stuff with you?

It reminds me of my childhood days living on Thursday Island in the Torres Strait, and how we would sneak into the old Green Hill Fort and see how long we could hang out in the tunnels and bunkers under the big gun placements before the ghosts in the shadows chased us out.

Yep, generally people sneaking about when the places have been abandoned and condemned and are falling apart!
