  • Guitar appraisals via email?

Assuming you provide adequate pics and receipts and documentation, can this be done? If so, can I get some recommends here? I'd like to work with someone who is at least familiar with Jackson/Charvels. I want to put a rider on my renter's insurance for my guitars, but they are asking for appraisals. I don't want to limit myself to local options, although that is the "Plan B".

Axewielder, find out first who your insurance company considers an "expert" in this field. I had to do this years ago with car insurance. I wanted to put a stated value on a collector car and according to the insurance company I needed an appraisal by an "expert" in their field. They told me an expert would be anyone who works on/ knows cars. That made it pretty simple to get them the appropriate appraisal.
Another insurance to look into is an Inland Marine Policy. Thats what I put on my guitars and they do not require an appraisal for that. You pay so many dollars in premiums per stated value.

I'll do it, how much you need em insured for? Seriously, it doesn't take much. My buddy Shaky can do it, he's done it for me. Send him $20 and tell him what you want. He's an Auth FMIC/Gibson/Marshall, JBL, etc etc etc.

Send serials, picks and what you paid for it and call it a day.

GC or any dealer should be able to tell ya what your gear is worth. In street value. GC may even be able to give ya a signed affidavit if needed. We've done this at my store. Just find a reputable dealer in your area. And give him a list or bring them in so he can assess each guitars condition. Or jsut get an insurance policy that has replacement value. Unless theyre vintage pieces then its a bit hard for that.

Well, you'd think that a guitar store would go by how much they'd buy it from you for (used, taking into account the markup they'd put on it when they sold it).

Since J/Cs rarely appreciate in value, and are subject to depreciation through normal use/wear, unless you've got an LTD or other "going up" model, or some specific models that aren't part of the production line (Shannon Soloist, Jazz'R, Custom Shop/NAMM pieces, San Dimas-era stuff, etc), I think you'll end up spending more on insurance than they're worth in the long run.
