Help me out here. I was a 3-sport athelete in high school (Basketball, Football, Baseball) but I never played organized hockey until I was in a roller hockey league after college. What I'm saying is that although I am a huge hockey fan I don't have the personal experience to relate to certain aspects of the game...in this instance I'm talking about fighting.
I read people here and elsewhere mention how Talbot changed the game around in the Pen's favor by getting Carcillo to drop the gloves, even though Carcillo beat the shit out of him. I personally never thought an event like that should have a major impact on a game (I've seen too many times where it doesn't), but there are players on both the Pens and Flyers saying that it was the definitive momentum changer.
Why is it that a team playing in the playoffs needs something "extra" for motivation? WTF would a professional athelete not already be giving everything he's got in a critical situation like game 6 in a playoff series? There shouldn't be any room to "dig deeper"...those depths should already be reached.
I understand how it can be a mental spark...but a mental spark shouldn't be able to generate 4 unanswered goals in a playoff game against a good team.
Even though I believe it does make a difference (especially now), I still fail to understand how or why. Thoughts from you guys who play/played the game?

it's just like in any sport. it can be anything at all. a good or bad bounce.
a beanball, an interception, a sack, or merely a walk or stolen base, wild pitch, etc.etc.etc. even though he did lose the fight, the ebbs and flows are constantly changing. talbot said fukk it, even if i get killed, this could change the mojo and it did. it still could have gone the other way, but it didn't so. it's trippy i do agree.
remember the "oil spill"? when the houston oilers (who I thought were the best team in the AFC at the time) were ahead 35-3 at halftime in the playoffs in Buffalo no less, and they tanked in the 2nd half and lost that game in overtime. one touchdown and a turnover sparked the biggest collapse i've ever seen. Not helping the situation since 1965!

The way I see fighting in the playoffs is this : It is a way for someone to show their teammates they are not willing to back down and will sacrifice 100% for the victory. If your team is mentally and physically tired, it gives them an opportunity to be reminded what they are playing for. The only issue is you are taking a risk because it could go either way.
The main thing to remember that there are probably less than 3000 players who have had their names engraved on that cup in it's 100+ years. There have been tens of thousands of players who have been in the league and haven't. It's a pretty exclusive club.GTWGITS! - RacerX

its not really a motivation thing. Fighting whether in playoffs or regular season can change the complexity of the game. If you getting beat on the scoreboard and your team just doesnt have it going on, a fight can spark a team outta the funk so to speak.
Even if a player gets a beatdown it can spark the team, especially if he's not a figher and takes on a goon..the team says hey..that little fucker has some balls...lets find ours tooshawnlutz.com

The Cap - Pens series will be a good one to watch. The Caps certainly have depth and skill. The Pens better get into the rookies head early. They need to start hard and fast, and not let up. If the Pens give the Caps an glimmer of hope it could go south fast.
This will be an interesting series to watch the Malkin - Ovechkin show. The key is to shut down and stifle Ovechkin, and to keep him from getting any big hits in. The Caps are a momentum team. If they get momentum it'll be all over but the cryin'.

The Canes won? Bastards are Vs couldn't show the game and NHL Network (useless this time of year) didn't have it and given there was nothing on Tv to watch I went up for the night. Wow... it was 3-2 NJ with 20 minutes left was it not? Well at leas the Flyer's won't look HORRIBLE this year I would prefer the Caps beat Pittsburgh, but that series will come down not to goal scoring, but D. And I give the Penguins an edge in Defense, though.
