What does "Made in USA" mean? That instead of a Chinese guy putting it in the box, there's a Chinese-American putting it in the box?

Reality check people - RCA is made in China, Sony is made in China, Intel is made in Vietnam, Ford is made in Mexico and Canada, designer clothing is made in Thailand, the parts in your USA Jackson guitar were made in Korea.

Walmart didn't kill small business. Small businesses killed themselves. If Walmart sells file cabinets for $20, then you sell file cabinets for $18. Don't sell them for $30 and whine about how Walmart kills small business.

99% of people only care about one thing: value. If I can buy a well-built item for $200, or a crappily-built item for $40, I'm buying the $40 item every time. Even if I have to replace it 5 times, I'm still ahead.

I say let the free market take over. Get rid of all the trade restrictions and import tariffs and all of that and let the best product win.

Oh, I bought NOTHING but expensive $30-$50 Imported Japanese Metal/hard rock CDs..up 'till about 6 years ago. When Metal started oozing back into popularity in the states, thank goodness. There is still many bands, including American bands old/new that are not printed on domestic labels. I'm not just talking about underground bands. I'm talking about Whitesnake's "Restless Heart" cd. Many people didn't know Whitesnake was alive 10 years ago..they were. But you had to pay 40+ bucks to have it.

Sounds like me at my old job. I only lasted a week. I would meticulously do my job but everyone would blame me for their laziness and it drove me nuts. Not only that, but after I quit, they took 2 months and about 8 trips on my behalf to pay me (It was over 30 hours of work owed). My parents were about to report them because it was actually illegal.

btw. the Chinese make great products only they ship all the crap to the rest of the world... it's been going on since forever... a couple of centuries ago there was a huge Chinese culture trend in Europe mostly because of Chinese ceramics and art... and people, mostly in France, started ordering tons of Chinese porcelain... but the Chinese didn't sent their usual stuff to Europe, they made a separate production line, cheaper quality, cheaper labor etc. and just for the fuck of it they wrote stuff like "I hope you enjoy this you white shitheads" in Chinese characters as the western world didn't understand it anyway.

A few things need to happen. Americans need to accept a lower wage, but at the same time wages in other countries need to come up. The average factory worker in China makes about 30 a month. They also need to increase tarrifs and taxes on imported items.

Funny you should say this, I was informed today by my manager that 1 of our 3 tech specialists would be forced to go to 3rd shift because the guys on 3rd shift don't know what they're doing and it's unfair of him to expect his 3rd shift supervisor to deal with that issue! WTF? Oh yeah, the average experience level of the guys there now is 5 years. I can easily see how this could breed contempt and a loss of "caring".

The tragic reality is that a HUGE amount of the people here that are in the demographic that will work cheap, are absolute total f-ing retards that can't be trusted to stay out of jail, let alone actually make it to work reliably and maybe make something of any quality.

At least the chinese have a work ethic and "want" to work and do well in their job. Maybe they've had enough hardship to know what happens when you don't.

Most of the "A-hole" Americans, work just hard enough to not get fired.

Of course upper management has basically drove people that might actually worked hard and effectively, to lose initiative by the way they treat the workers. There's no doubt there.

I venture to say a lot guys here on a guitar collector board are from areas where there is some public sensibility with the general population to "some" extent. In the inner cities, a vast amount of the poorer people are absolutely ignorant freaks. Watch a few episode of COPs and that is what a large amount of the American public is about.

Other country's people are dying to come here for education and are happy to take the world by the balls and work (often back in their own countries of course). But many American cities are full of people that are worthless uneducated ignorant idiots with some deranged sense of entitlement and welfare state mentality.

With what I experience and see in the onner cities, I see why we're so fucked. And at some point, nothing short of few hundred effectively placed neutron bomb will help.

This is what we have to work with people. No stimulis package can fix dumbass ignorants fucks. You just can't fix stupid.

Yeah, do I sound bitter? Well ya got that shit straight....

I would opt to keep job here by buying Amercian. All my cars are American. I never owned any imports. Does that mean all the parts including my Sony car stereo was made here..?
And ironically now the Japanese probably build as many autos in the US as the Big 3 build in Mexico and Canada. I also agree with it coming down to bang for the buck though. Only difference in tools. Unless I'm going to use it once, it has to be something made in the US or Germany (which a lot of my father's are). Some of this Chinese stuff is dangerously crappy. They are good from using them for tasks when you don't want to potentially damage a good tool though. I think good tools are one of the most underrated American-built items to every day man because most people now just pay someone else to do the work.

As for Wal-Mart, food and lawn supply prices are cheap, but the actual equiptment gets bought from someone who can actually fix it when it breaks beyond my ability to repair. One positive though is it does keep people employed (albeit the legality of their living in this country varies from area to area).

The problem with China is it will never become like Japan. The Japanese way of thinking was like this; instead of making a widget last 100,000 uses when it may only be used 30,000 they made it last 70,000. This cut costs and still made a good product. The Chinese way of thinking is quantity over quality right now. I also think the Japanese used to be pickier in the way things were put together, especially their finer products like cameras. Contax/Pentax used to be durable, precise, and very well made. We still have a SLR that is probably gonig on 35 years old. As long as the mentality is China is to build as many as cheaply and quickly as possible, I don't see them ever reaching this point.

To be fair tho, I may be wet behind the ears but I'm still old enough to remember these same arguments being made about Japanese products back in the 80's. From cars to electronics to tools to whatever crap they were sending at the time. So now it's China, India is getting going and then ...

Was looking at Milwaukee and Ridgid chopsaws the otherday. Yup both made in China. I think Dewalt has their stuff made over there too.
To a large degree, you are right - BUT at the time there were American products that compete(d) with the imports. American business has pretty much deserted American manufacturing - even in non-union states so that doesn't totally fly. American service industry is next on the chopping block. Seeing it daily.

To recap - the old codgers were right bemoaning imports, it has just completely overtaken domestic production to the point of no return now. It took 40 years to become reality but the folks complaining about Japanese imports were right and now places like Japan aren't reaping the benefits, but China.

When the deathstar is complete, and all manufacturing and all services that don't have to be performed on site are offshore, what are we all going to do to deserve our 2 cars, college education and home with a pool guys? don't need local managers for people that aren't here. And we can't all be CEOs.

What industry will fix this? Socialized medicine?
