  • Madden To Retire

NBC just made the announcement. Here is Madden's statement:

"It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not...
It's been such a great ride... the NFL has been my life for more than 40 years, it has been my passion - it still is. I appreciate all of the people who are and were such an important part of the most enjoyable, most fun anyone could have... that great life with the teams, the players, the coaches, the owners, the League... my broadcasting partners Pat and Al... the production people and the fans...is still great... it's still fun and that's what it makes it hard and that's why it took me a few months to make a decision.

I still love every part of it - the travel, the practices, the game film, the games, seeing old friends and meeting new people... but I know this is the right time."

        a great football man.
the Raiders of the 70's were as tough and mean as they come.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

I did not like the guy as announcer, but I hope this is not due to health issues as frankly, last y ear he sounded like crap.

The game's just not the same without Madden. He will be missed - hopefully his retirement will be shortlived like Pat Somerall.

Good God...are you guys fucking serious? He is the most annoying man on the planet. If I hear one more thing about "Turducken" or any other food related rants I would have had to shoot myself. One of the greatest coaches, but damn...I would rather have Dennis Miller in the booth. Now I have to focus all my hate on Thiessman who is almost as annoying.

I'm not a huge fan of the announcing, but he was a great football man.
Raiders of the 70's, end of story. theisman is unlistenable.

Best thing that happened to Thiessman was L.T.

I dunno, what I found funny was no one mentioned Harry Kalas passing which I think may have influenced Madden's decision to retire.
