"I STOOD BESIDE YOUR BED LAST NIGHT"
      --Author unknown
I stood beside your bed last night, I came to have a peep.
I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you so softly as you brushed away a tear,
      "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,
You were thinking of the many times your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.
I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.
I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.
I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "It's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.
I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you everyday.
To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...
In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning
And say "goodnight, and blessed be, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,
I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.
Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

      -------------------------

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny
      paws and soft fur.

You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in
awhile, you'd let out a little yelp just to let me know that this was your
      territory.

Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a
passion, and when I scolded you, you just put your head down and looked
up at me with those innocent eyes, as if to say, "I'm sorry, but I'll do
it again as soon as you're not watching."

As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking
      at everyone who walked by.

When I had a tough day at work, you would be
waiting for me with your tail wagging, just to say, "Welcome home. I missed
      you."

You never had a bad day and I could always count on you to be there for me.
When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap,
looking for attention. You never asked for anything more than to have me
pat your head so you could go to sleep with your head over my leg.

As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then, one day, old age finally
took its toll and you couldn't stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down
and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked up at
me as if to say that you were old and tired and that after all these years of not
asking for anything, you had to ask me for one favor.

With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time you
were lying next to me. For some strange reason, you were able to stand up in the
animal hospital; perhaps it was your sense of pride.

As the vet led you away, you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked
at me as if to say,
"Thank you for taking care of me."
I thought, "No.... thank you for taking care of me."

      ~A DOG'S PLEA~
Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world
is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your
hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly
teach me the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as
you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls
      upon my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold and wet, for I am a domesticated
animal, no longer accustomed to bitter elements. I ask no greater
glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for I cannot tell you when I suffer
thirst. Feed me clean food that I may stay well, to romp and play and do
your bidding, to walk by your side and stand ready, willing and able to
protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, my friend, when I am very old, and I no longer enjoy good health,
hearing and sight, do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am
not having any fun. Please see that my trusting life is taken gently.

I shall leave this earth knowing with the last breath I draw that my
fate was always safest in your hand.
