IMO, I'd use a very clean amp and a few Boss Metal Zones..depending how much distortion you need. If it's not brutal enough, just add another Metal Zone. Once I got the best heavy metal tone ever achieved by man by slamming a bass amp with 5 Boss Metal Zones. The rythm tone was a tad "fizzy" but cleaned up nicely when I rolled my guitar's volume back.
The best part is you can run them in the front or the loop or both..the possibilities are endless. I don't know why this isn't suggested more often.:think:

But you're gonna need a boost for solos, a DS-1 should do it.
