Hell, I remember when I still lived in SoCal you could get the Chinese AKs for like $250. I don't know if they were drastically inferior though, and the Romanian and other Eastern European versions did go up quite a bit in price.

Of course te last time I looked was probably early 2002, which I just realized has been quite a long time! B&B in North Hollywood - the store that armed LAPD when those two bank robbers shot 'em up pretty good. B&B issued them a bunch of AKs and suddenly things got bad for the robbers!

I know some AK's are better then other depending on the country of origin. Aren't the Eastern block rifles the prized ones? A friend used to work at a local gun shop, ended up with a Polish one for cheap. I can't remember the price, but it was during the Clinton ban, when all the prices were really high. It looks like the classic AK, not the sportster one with the stupid pistolgrip/butt stock thing, and the cool beveled compensator on the barrel.
