A very similar incident happened here recently (like a week ago), where the cops were chasing some clown through town on a Saturday night about 2AM (and this town is dead at 2AM on a Saturday), when the guy does a Dukes Of Hazzard jump near the jail and lands on some woman's car while she's in it and kills her.
Everyone's blaming the cops, but if they'd not given chase there's no substantial evidence to prove 100% that it would not have happened. There will never be 100% proof that not chasing a criminal will not result in a serious problem, so we tell the cops to chase the criminals until they catch them.
