Band Tips

I will try not to drag this out. Saturday my band played a private party. After the gig a loaded my gear and took off. (something I have never done before) 2 of the band members received a tip from the guy hosting the party of $200 each. The bass player was told to wait and he would get his. He had to work in the morning but waited around till 1:30am and finally decided to go. The only reason I found out about the tip was because the bass player told something was up.
How do you guys think the tip situation should have been handled?
Should they be considered personal tips or tips that should have divided evenly between the band members.
I guess the part that bothers me the most is these guys are my best friends for over 20yrs. All of us are in our 40s. The fact that they tried to hide this from me makes me not want to trust them any more. So it is not about the money as much as it is about the trust.

why don't you just ask them? Maybe the host only wanted to tip the two of them for some reason, valid or otherwise. Maybe he tipped them because they stuck around and partied into the night with him.

I'd ask them and talk to them about it before deciding anything, and would also take in what they say and resolve not to make a decision in the heat of that moment.

It sounds pretty bad, but rather than let it fester, discuss it with them openly.

The host wanted to tip me but I was already gone. The band members that received their tips claim they were personal tips and if I was there I would have got mine. I did ask the drummer about it the next day and he preceded in calling F words and asked if I wanted to go to his house and settle it once and for all. I was on the road so I went over and he kept moving in to my personal space with a beer bottle in his hand so I decided to leave before it got any worst than it already was.

Unless they performed "other services" outside of the band playing all money received should go to the band and divided up equally...I'd tell em eFF off and try to find band members with integrity.

Yeah that's f'ed up. The payment was for playing, not for sticking around afterwards.

Personally, unless the band was my only career, any money made for playing would go into the band fund.

Yeah, I was going to say the same thing. That should be one of the things that gets sorted out when you first get together - payments of all types and how they should be distributed.

Personally...I would share...even if the tipper said..."This is JUST for you...because YOU are the shit!!!!" actually...it happens all the time...j/k!!!
